College softball

SALISBURY — Catawba rolled 12-14 and 10-2 against Virginia State in Sunday’s softball doubleheader at Whitley Field.

Catawba (6-2) put together a seven-run third inning to take the opener. Leah Huggins had two doubles and four RBIs. Sydney Goertzen went 3-for-3 and scored three runs.

Freshman Summer Howerton got her first college win.

In the second game, Preston Ellenberg was the winning pitcher in relief. Sierrah McCarthy had a two-run single to put Catawba ahead 4-2. Nicole Hunter had a three-run homer and a two-run double.

Catawba is off until next Saturday when it goes to Barton.

 

College football

Catawba has released its 2019 football schedule.

The slate will feature five home contests and a first-ever meeting with UVA-Wise, the newest member of the South Atlantic Conference.

Catawba will make its home debut in the season opener against West Georgia. It marks the fourth time in five years that the teams will meet to begin the season. The Indians are looking for their first win over the Wolves since a playoff victory in 2000.

After a pair of road games at Winston-Salem State and UNC Pembroke, Catawba will return home to face Wingate for its SAC opener on Sept. 28. That matchup will come during Family Weekend and is the only scheduled home night game of the season. The contest will feature a post-game fireworks show.

Two more league road games follow at Limestone and Carson-Newman before home contests versus Newberry and Mars Hill.

Mars Hill will be the Indians’  homecoming opponent. Then the Indians have road games at Tusculum and UVA-Wise.

UVA-Wise begins as a league member in the fall of 2019.

The regular season is capped on Nov. 16 with a home matchup with defending SAC champion Lenoir-Rhyne. The game anchors Hall of Fame weekend festivities.

Kickoff times for away contests will be set at a later date.

College golf

In the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate in Palm City, Fla., UNC Greensboro’s Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) shot a 4-under  68 on Sunday and is in second place.

 

College swimming

Catawba posted three school records, taking down one of the oldest on the books, on the final day of 2019 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships on Saturday night at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.

Both Catawba teams finished fifth among the eight teams at the Championships.

All three records on Saturday came on the women’s side. Oryan Malul posted a new standard in the 200 fly with a time of 2:12.06. The 400 free relay team of Carolin Albers, Claire Featherstone, Emily Najar and Carolin Bek lowered the mark to a time of 3:32.94.

The most notable record came earlier in the 1650 free. Marcia-Mariel Erhart eclipsed the 17-year-old record that was held by Melissa Schiffel and set in 2002. Erhart bettered the mark by nearly eight seconds with a swim of 17:21.85. The time placed her fourth in the event which was the best finish by a Catawba swimmer at the Championships.

College track and field

Catawba finished competition at the VMI Winter Relays with six more school records.

Most of Catawba’s track and field team will be gearing up for the South Atlantic Championships on Feb. 23-24 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.

 

College lacrosse

SALISBURY — Belmont Abbey, ranked 10th, rallied to grab a 17-13 win over host Catawba in men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.

It was the season opener for the Indians. Cole Fanzo led Catawba with four goals.

Catawba returns to action on Friday, hosting Mount Olive at 4 p.m.

 

Men’s basketball

MISENHEIMER — Pfeiffer scored 23 points in overtime and outscored N.C. Wesleyan, 139-131, on Saturday at Merner Gym.

The teams combined for 33 3-pointers.

Pfeiffer senior Kyle Riddley scored 40 points, shooting 14-for-25 from the field.

 

Salisbury Academy basketball

The Salisbury Academy jayvee girls basketball team won the WCCAA conference championship by beating St. Stephens Lutheran School, 36-6.

Leading scorers were Kennedi Fisher with 12 points, Lanie Humble with 10 points, and Ava Morris with  six.

Fisher and Humble were named to the all-conference team. Caroline Snow was named conference MVP.

The Salisbury Academy jayvee boys basketball team won the WCCAA conference championship by defeating Tabernacle Christian School, 51-13.

Leading scorers for the Jaguars were Jacob Mills with 21 points, Warren Fesperman with 10 points, and John McCoy with seven.

Abdul Eliwa and Avery Arnez were named to the all-conference team. Mills was named conference MVP.

 

Jayvee basketball

Carson’s girls won against Statesville on Friday, 37-21.

Makayla Johnson scored 14, Camden Corley had 11, and Iyonna Parker had 10 for the Cougars.

Sophie Hill and Maddie Morgan were defensive standouts.

Alaya Summers scored 10 for Greyhounds.

  

Middle school basketball

Knox’s boys won against Erwin, 64-22.

Yohance Connor scored 28 points and had seven steals to lead the Trojans, who bounced back from a loss to Mooresville.

Da’Shawn Brown had 14 points, 13 steals and five assists.

Tyvonta Rushmeyer scored 10 points, and Tim Davis III had four.

 

High school soccer

Statesville goalkpeer Josh Fuhrman was named to play in this summer’s East-West All-Star Game in Greensboro.

 

High school football

Cannon School and Concord First Assembly Academy announced they’ll form a football co-op for the 2019, 2020, and 2021 seasons.

The new team will have a new name—the Cabarrus Warriors.

Team colors will be black and Vegas gold. Cannon School’s head coach Brad Hoover will serve as  head coach of the Warriors. Both schools will be represented on the coaching staff.

The Warriors will practice and host games at Cannon School.

Cannon and CFA Academy’s cheer teams will keep the names, colors and uniforms of their respective schools as a way for each community to maintain some identity of its own.

SAC

The South Atlantic Conference men’s and women’s soccer championships, as well as the volleyball championship will have new homes beginning in 2019.

Men’s and women’s soccer championships will be moving to the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex in Matthews, while the volleyball championships will take place at the Rock Hill Sports and Event Center.

Both championships will be played at their new locations for two years with options to renew after the 2020 championships.

 

State Games

North Carolina’s largest multi-sport, amateur athletic sporting event will be returning to the Charlotte region in 2019. The Powerade State Games of North Carolina will host events in Charlotte, Concord, Huntersville, Mooresville, Cornelius, Indian Trail and Pineville from June 1-June 23, 2019.

 

Shamrock Run

Runners and fun walkers who register for Mocksville’s 31st Annual Shamrock Run before March 1 will be sure to have something green to wear on St. Patrick’s Day.

They will be guaranteed getting an official race T-shirt on race day, March 16, the day before the traditional wearing of the green.

Runners can register on-line, by mail, or in person on the day before or on March 16 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, which hosts The Shamrock Run featuring USATF Certified 10K and 5K races as well as an untimed  5K Fun Walk.

Racing Toes will professionally time the run using a disposable chip system that will insure shorter check-in lines, less confusion on race day, better timing accuracy and faster results.

On-line registration is available at www.RunSignup.com and closes at noon, March 14.

Runners also can register by mail by downloading the form from www.ShamrockRunNC.com  and mailing it with a check by March 8 to: Shamrock Run Race Director, St. Francis of Assisi Church, 862 Yadkinville Rd., Mocksville, NC 27028.

Runners and Fun Walkers can also register at the church on the day before or the day of the races

The fee for registering for the 5K race or the 10K race before March 10 is $25; students under 18 pay $20. The fee for running both races is $35 with students under 18 paying $25. There is an extra fee of $10 if you register after that date. The fee for the untimed Fun Walk is $15.

Race packets will be available at 7 a.m. on Saturday, March 16.

The 5 K Run will start at 8:15 a.m. and the 10K race begins at 9 a.m.

Award ceremonies and festivities will follow after the conclusion of each race.
