North girls

SPENCER — Gray Stone beat North Rowan in a battle for second place in the Yadkin Valley Conference on Friday.

The Knights (15-5, 10-3)  took a 41-37 victory and swept the season series from the Cavaliers. North lost at Gray Stone in early January, 43-29.

In the rematch, it was much closer. North got 18 points from freshman Hannah Wilkerson and 14 from Jamiya Daniels.

“We fought hard for four quarters,” North coach Lamar Wilkerson said. “It went to the wire and we never stopped fighting. Any coach would’ve been proud of the performance we had tonight.”

North (12-10, 10-4) had a five-game winning streak stopped.

North scoring (37) — Wilkerson 18, Daniels 14, Robbins 3, Taborn 1, Sherrill 1.

East girls

TROUTMAN — East Rowan lost a tough one at South Iredell on Friday.

The Vikings took the North Piedmont Conference game, 58-56.

“All the losses stick with you, but this one is going to eat at me for a while,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “We played hard and we played well in spurts. It’s a game we should have won and it hurts to lose it.”

Adalie Harrison scored 16 for the Mustangs. Brooke Mitchell scored a career-high 14. Grace Eagle had 11, and Mary Spry scored 10.

East  (13-9, 1-7) led 33-28 at halftime and got off to a nice start in the third quarter. East pushed ahead by as many as 11, but back-to-back 3-pointers at the end of the third quarter by South Iredell’s Sarah Nelson turned the game around. She beat the buzzer with the second of those 3-pointers after chasing down an errant pass by East.

“We got sloppy with turnovers and we missed shots,” Holland said.

South Iredell went up by nine points. East cut it down to two late.

“We really missed (injured senior) Zee Winford’s defense tonight,” Holland said. “Nelson scored five at our place. Tonight she had 22.”

Lydia Mercer added 15 for the Vikings (5-14, 1-7), while Addison LaBelle scored 13.

South Iredell stopped a long slide. The Vikings hadn’t won a game since Dec. 20.

E. ROWAN (56) — Harrison 16, Mitchell 14, Eagle 11, Spry 10, Houpe 5.

S. IREDELL (58) — Nelson 22, Mercer 15, LaBelle 13, King 4, Bell 2, Wightman 2.
