The John Knox Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Mount Ulla presented Good Citizen awards to two local high school students.

Winner Honesty Carter of West Rowan High School is the daughter of Leala Carter and Wendell Bradley. Carter is an outstanding A student, captain in ROTC and American Legion Post 107 Rowan County Queen. She runs track and field. After graduation, she plans to attend East Carolina or Howard University and study health science.

Finalist Olivia Weatherby of Carson High Schoo, is the daughter of Glynn and Catrina Weatherby. She is an honor student, president of Crosby Scholars, drum major and swim team captain, and she takes part in cross country, tennis and track. Weatherby founded Liv’s Handmade Bracelets and hopes to be a youth pastor after graduation. She plans to pursue a degree in health sciences at Cabarrus College, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte or Western Carolina.

The compositions written by both students on “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It” were read at the monthly John Knox meeting lead by Marjie Aggers, regent. A luncheon honoring both students and their parents was held at Trinity Oaks. John Knox committee Chairwoman Deborah Alexander organized the luncheon.

Catawba College professor collaborates virtually with art department at Georgia College

Tyler W. Davis, visiting assistant professor in Catawba College’s Department of Environment and Sustainability, gave a virtual presentation to Professor Matthew Forrest’s advanced printmaking art class at Georgia College in Milledgeville, Georgia.

The students will make prints based on geographic information systems data in collaboration with Davis.

The intercollegiate experience was made possible by a grant from Georgia College titled New Innovations Within Art and Science Technologies.

Interdenominational Ministers Fellowship committee accepting scholarship applications

The Interdenominational Ministers Fellowship scholarship committee is accepting applications for the 2019 Treasure Feamster Scholarship.

Applications will be received through April 5 and must be postmarked by that date.

The scholarships are available for high school seniors who are members of an Interdenominational Ministers Fellowship-affiliated church, regardless of their chosen field of study. Students can check with their guidance office or affiliated churches for applications or information.
