Area Sports Briefs: North girls get YVC victory

SPENCER — Freshman Hannah Wilkerson scored 17 points to lead North Rowan’s girls basketball team  to a 41-37 Yadkin Valley Conference win against South Stanly on Tuesday.

Wilkerson has scored in double figures 16 times in 17 games.

Natavia Taborn added 12 points for the Cavaliers (8-9, 6-3), who finished a season sweep of the Bulls. North pulled out a 41-37 decision in Norwood.

Ki’Mya Lynch had one of her better games for North  with seven points.

“We came out hard and played a great defensive game,” NR coach Lamar Wilkerson said. “Our focus was defense. We pressed fullcourt, forced turnovers and kept our momentum going. We also got a lot of help from our bench tonight — offensively and defensively.”

North has topped last season’s total of wins.

North plays at home against  Uwharrie Charter on Friday and goes to North Stanly on Tuesday.

College track & field

At Virginia Tech, North Carolina A&T freshman Cambrea Sturgis (A.L. Brown) ran the eighth-fastest 200 meters time by a college woman in the indoor season when she was clocked in 23.43 seconds.

Sturgis also has run 7.38 in the 60 meters and a 54.80 leg on a 4×400 relay.

Sturgis ran for the Salisbury Speedsters program for coach Tim Dunlap.

Livingstone hoops

Livingstone’s Roger Ray is the CIAA Player of the Week for men’s basketball as well as the BOXTOROW HBCU National Player of the Week.

  Ray averaged 22.3 points and 8.0 assists for the Blue Bears  and shot 54 percent from the field and shot 57 percent from 3-point range in wins over Chowan, Morris and Claflin. Ray had 33 points and eight assists against Claflin and scored 28 points and handed out 10 assists against Chowan.

College baseball

Catawba baseball has been picked first in the SAC preseason poll.

Catawba got eight of 11 first-place votes from SAC coaches. Lincoln Memoriall, which won the SAC tournament last season, got the other three first-place votes.

Catawba third baseman Jackson Raper (Robinson), relief pitcher DJ Laxton and DH Heath Mitchem (Carson) are on the preseason All-SAC first team.

Mars Hill catcher Matt Honeycutt (South Rowan) is on the preseason All-SAC first team.

Women’s basketball

UNC Pembroke’s Aliyah Farmer shot 9-for-10 and scored a career-high 20 points in 21 minutes in Monday’s win against Georgia Southwestern.

Avery Locklear (South Rowan) also had a good day for UNCP  with nine points and four assists.

NC Hall of Fame

The North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame announced a new induction class Tuesday — Ernie Barnes (sports artist), Willie Bradshaw (coach), Eddie Bridges (hunting/fishing), Rod Broadway (football), Gene Corrigan (ACC commissioner), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (racing), Steve Gabriel (wrestling), Dee Kantner (official), Davis Love III (golf), Paul Miller (football), Neill McGeachy)coach/AD) and Thell Overman (coach).

They’ll be enshrined during the 56th annual induction banquet on the evening of Friday, May 3, at the Raleigh Convention Center.

Middle school hoops

Knox won against China Grove, 61-27, in jayvee middle school basketball.

Yohance Connor had 27 points, seven assists and three steals for the Trojans. Deshawn Brown had 10 points and eight rebounds.

The J.F. Hurley YMCA is taking registrations for a high school boys basketball (18U) league.

  Rowan Little League spring baseball, softball and T-ball registrations are being held at Godley’s Garden Center on Statesville Boulvard on Saturdays,  Jan. 26, Feb. 2 and Feb. 9 from 9 until 3.

Baseball is $75 for all leagues:  T-ball (ages 4-6), Coach Pitch (ages 7-8), B (ages 9-10), A (ages 11-12) and Jr./Sr. (ages 13-16).

Softball is $75 for all leagues: T-ball (ages 4-6), Coach Pitch (ages 6-8), 10U (ages 8-10), 12U (ages 10-12) and 14U/16U (ages 13-16).

Girls basketball

Hickory Ridge’s girls beat Porter Ridge on Tuesday, 76-20.

   Kennedy Calhoun led the Bulls (13-2, 5-1) with 18 points.
