SALISBURY — Renewal, redistricting and a new option for bad-weather makeup days will be on the table for discussion today as the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education meets for its monthly work session.

Renewal talks, led by Superintendent Lynn Moody, will present school board members with two options for implementing school-based renewal plans.

One open-ended option would require the board to review and provide feedback on plans presented by each of Rowan’s 34 schools before voting on each plan individually.

In the second option, the school board would set parameters and core requirements for renewal plans, delegating the individualized review to district-level staff. District-level staff would then provide the board with a high-level overview of the plans for approval.

Redistricting discussions will look at the goals and factors of the student assignment process.

The board also will vote on a new option for bad-weather makeup days: eLearning days that allow students to make up work outside class rather than scheduling in-person makeup days.

Proposed eLearning days appear to address a question voiced by many parents and guardians during periods of bad weather: If teachers are working from home, why can’t students be doing the same?

Students will have five days following their return to school after a bad-weather day to complete eLearning assignments, either through digital tools and resources or nondigital resources.

The board will meet at 1 p.m. today in the Wallace Educational Board Room, 500 N. Main St.

In other business on today’s agenda:

• The board could approve a retreat from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 23.
• The board will discuss a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant received by the Paul Dunbar Group.
• The board will look at adopting the 2019-20 calendar for Rowan County Early College.
• The board will explore SchooLinks, a career and college readiness platform for middle and high school students.
• The board will be presented a five-year teacher turnover report.
