Boys roundup …

North Rowan

SPENCER — North Rowan’s Brevin Goodlett needed 19 points for 1,000 for his career and got them in a hurry — by the end of the first quarter.

Goodlett reached the milestone on a 3-pointer. He finished with 25 points in Friday’s 72-39 blowout of Yadkin Valley Conference basketball opponent South Davidson.

“Scoring 1,000 points, it’s a big achievement, it’s tough to do,” North coach Jason Causby said. “I coached Salisbury for 10 seasons, coached a lot of really good players, but I only had two kids score 1,000 in that time.”

Goodlett scored 180 as a varsity freshman at East, added another 180 as a sophomore at North and pumped in 371 as a junior. He’s having his best season as a senior and has scored 275 points in 14 games for a county-leading 19.6 points per game.

Causby really wanted Goodlett to get to 1,000 at home and he wanted him to take care of it Friday night. Now the Cavaliers can focus on  their road game at Albemarle, one of the contenders in the YVC.

Dayjuwon Cooke added 15 points for the Cavaliers (12-2, 7-0), who have won five in a row.

Thomas Ellington scored 15 for the Wildcats (1-13, 0-6).

S. DAVIDSON (39) — T. Ellington 15, Byerly 6, J. Ellington 6, DeLattre 5, Hicks 4, Buie 2, Jernigan 1.

N. ROWAN (72) — Goodlett 25, Cooke 15, Davis 9, Page 8, Robinson 7, Goodes 6, Wilson 2.

Carson-East Rowan

CHINA GROVE — Sophomore Javon Smith enjoyed a career game with 20 points and Carson also got 20 from senior Cole Perry in a 67-46 win against rival East Rowan.

The Cougars led only 31-29 at halftime but dominated the second half of the North Piedmont Conference contest.

Carson beat East for the 10th time in a row.

“It’s a big one for us,” Carson coach Brian Perry said. “We really needed to win our two home games this week and we got  both of them. It was a good week, a great way to start the conference season.”

Carson (7-8, 2-0) is tied for first with Statesville.

Smith got Carson started with a couple of 3-pointers, and then AJ Mauldin (15 points) got hot. The Mustangs (8-7, 1-1) battled back behind a hot streak by David Jordan (14 points) and trailed by two at the break.

But the Cougars controlled the second half. Perry made key shots and Smith made free throws as the Cougars pulled away.

Carson was able to hold East’s athletic 6-foot-7 big man Elton Hooper to 10 points.

“The plan was to take it at him, try to get him in foul trouble,” Coach Perry said. “He got some fouls and had to sit some. And I thought our guys did a good job defensively on him. EJ Clark did a good job against Hooper in the Christmas tournament and worked hard to limit him again. And Jake Harris also did a good job defensively.”

Carson lost Cole Hales early to an ankle injury.

EAST (46) — Jordan 14, Hooper 10, Bennett 9, Hinceman 7, Pinckney 4, Jefferson 2, Sprinkle, Shuping, Padgett.

CARSON (67) — Smith 20, Perry 20, Mauldin 15, Clark 7, Zuniga 3, Spry 2, Hales, Jackson, Washington, Harris, Allen.

Zack Brawley added 17 for West, while Bryson Moss had 11.

West (2-13, 0-2)  trailed 12-0 at the outset and was still down 45-31 at halftime.

The Falcons put together a big run in the third quarter, tied the game at 56-all and went up by a single point after three quarters.
