Updated area sports briefs: Basketball tonight at Catawba; big NPC win for WR wrestling

Catawba’s basketball teams are at home tonight against Coker, with games scheduled for  6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The rest of the home games on the 2018-19 Catawba men’s basketball schedule will air on WCCB Charlotte sister station Antenna TV.

Antenna TV is available on Spectrum channel 1261 or via digital antenna on channel 18.2. Spectators who do not live in the Charlotte area can watch the live stream at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/catawba/.

Area high school games tonight (Wednesday) include West Rowan at South Rowan; Davie at A.L. Brown, and North Moore at North Rowan.

 Livingstone’s teams play at home against Elizabeth City State at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

 

High school wrestling

Wrestling at heavyweight, Baiden Suddarth’s pin lifted West Rowan to a 42-40 win against East Rowan on Tuesday in Granite Quarry.

Suddarth usually wrestles at 195 for the Falcons.

West (12-1, 2-0 North Piedmont  Conference) also got pins from Daniel Livengood (120), CJ Robinson (132), Mike Molenda (138), Gavin Coffield (152) and Alex Erazo (195). Drake Martin won by forfeit at 220.

Getting pins for the Mustangs were Luke Heglar (106), Nate Burrage (113), Hayden Fann (126), Stephen Deutsch (160), Tayron Frost (170) and Mateo Ramirez (182).

Oren Bost won a major decision for East at 145.

Mid. school boys

Knox’s boys defeated Erwin, 65-36.

Tyreze Miller led the Trojans with 15 points. JyMikaah Wells scored 12, while  Jayden “Juke” Harris added nine.

CJ Toomer and Jerome Blakeney III  scored eight each. Rasheem Wilson scored seven.

Knox hosts North Rowan Middle today to conclude the regular season.

The tournament starts on Saturday, Jan. 12, at West Rowan Middle.

JV boys

Salisbury’s Cameron Stout scored 23 on Tuesday in a 56-39 loss to North Davidson.

Garrett Hayes scored 16 to lead the Black Knights.

 

CIAA hoops

  The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s basketball tournament is headed to Baltimore in 2021.

The CIAA will move  the event to Baltimore for three years.

  Baltimore beat out longtime host Charlotte,  and Norfolk.

CIAA tournament week has an economic impact of more than $50 million.

High school hoops

The NCHSAA is moving the Western Regional basketball games to Hickory.

The eight regional finals will be played at Lenoir-Rhyne and at Catawba Valley Community College, with four games at each site.

North Davidson is hosting  the Martin Luther King Jr. Classic at North Davidson on Saturday, Jan. 19.

North Davidson’s team features guard Themus Fulks. He broke ND’s school single-game scoring record at Salisbury on Tuesday with 46 points. The record of 43 had stood since 1971.

The SAC Indoor Track and Field Championships will take place on Feb. 23-24 at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.
