SALISBURY —  Salisbury freshmen Rachel McCullough and Jaleiah Gibson combined for 41 points with career highs on Tuesday, but at the heart of an impressive Central Carolina Conference  victory over North Davidson’s girls was senior Bryanna Troutman.

Troutman is a great passer out of the high post and constantly located McCullough for open 3-point looks or dumped the ball down low to Gibson for power layups, as the Hornets blew out a pretty solid opponent, 72-55.

Salisbury led by 30 before North Davidson finished the game with a 14-1 run against  reserves.

Salisbury (11-2, 7-1) put together a devastating second quarter in which it made five 3-pointers and put up 31 points.

“Just a great team effort on defense as well as the offensive end,” Salisbury coach Lakai Brice said. “All week we worked on defense and rebounding. We played great team defense tonight and that led to a good offensive game.”

“Mini LeBron” is what  Brice calls Troutman, and the Wingate signee showed why on Tuesday with 19 rebounds, nine assists and six blocks to go with her 12 points.  Some missed layups cost her double-figure assists and a triple-double.

North Davidson (8-4, 3-3) led by a point after the first quarter, but the game  swung suddenly in Salisbury’s direction when Anayia Fulson hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark that second-quarter surge by the Hornets.

Salisbury sprinted from a precarious 15-14 lead to a 41-23 halftime advantage.

Fulson had the defensive assignment on North Davidson’s standout freshman Emily Hege. Fulson got in some foul trouble but did a good job. Hege scored 23, but some came with the issue no longer in doubt.

Ashley Davis added 13 for the Black Knights.

McCullough was the most aggressive she’s been all season, rebounding and driving as well as bombing 3-pointers. She made six 3-pointers on her way to 24 points and scored 10 in the early stages of the fourth quarter to put the Black Knights away.

Gibson had 17 points and six rebounds. She had eight of those points in the decisive second quarter.

“Our bench also did a very good job tonight,” Brice said. “We were able to turn up the pressure and our intensity was much better than it’s been in recent games.”

Chantal Robinson and Jinika Glenn didn’t score much for the Hornets, but they brought serious energy and impacted the game with defense and hustle.

Fulson, who missed Saturday’s game with North Rowan due to a death in her family, scored 12 points, including a difficult, driving banker for a 71-41 lead with four minutes left.

West girls win

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan’s girls never really stopped East Rowan on Tuesday, but the high-powered Falcons outscored the Mustangs, 72-60, in the North Piedmont Conference opener for both teams.

“I don’t think our defense was that bad, but it’s going to be tough for us to win if we give up 72,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “I though we played hard and played pretty well, but we  had too many breakdowns defensively. West’s size makes it really tough and their guards hit some big 3-pointers.”

West won its eighth straight in the rivalry.

Junior Abigail Wilson led the Falcons (12-1, 1-0) with 23 points. Wilson got rolling in the second quarter as the Falcons took a 35-27 lead at the break.

Mary Sobataka scored 22  and made three 23-pointers. The senior has 947 career points. Gabby Blabon and Taylor Poole, junior guards, chipped in with eight points each.

Grace Eagle scored 23 points to lead East (11-3, 0-1). Adalie Harrison had 15 and freshman Mary Spry had a big second half and finished with 14. Brooke Mitchell had eight.

“Grace got a bit of her rhythm back, and Adalie was steady all the way through,” Holland said. “But the NPC— it’s just going to be rugged.”

North girls fall

MISENHEIMER — North Rowan’s girls lost  at Gray Stone, 43-29, in Yadkin Valley Conference action on Tuesday.

North (5-8, 3-2) got a big game from freshman Hannah Wilkerson, who scored 18 points, but it wasn’t enough.

Danielle Werts scored 17 to pace the Knights (8-4, 4-2).

The Knights led at halftime, 25-16.

Gray Stone is 3-0 against the Cavs the last two seasons.

South girls roll

LEXINGTON – South Rowan’s girls won on the road at Central Davidson in Central Carolina Conference play on Tuesday.

South senior Janiya Downs came in averaging nearly 29 points a game and was even better than usual in a 58-34 victory. Downs posted a triple-double with 38 points, 14 rebounds and 10 steals.

South (7-5, 6-1) also got a boost from a career-best seven points from Lauren Shell. Madison McGuire scored six.

The Raiders ended the night in second place in the CCC.

Central Davidson fell to 2-10 overall and 1-7 in the league.

Central limited Downs to 18 and 19 points in two losses to South last season.

CONCORD — A.L. Brown’s girls lost their South Piedmont Conference opener at Central Cabarrus on Tuesday.

The Vikings got 14 points apiece from Mariah Barrie, Jael Miller and Aniyah Tate in an easy 55-18 victory.

Central (7-7, 1-0) led at halftime, 30-5.

A.L. Brown (0-12, 0-1) was led by Annie Corpening with eight points.

CHARLOTTE — Nia Daniel had 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead Hickory Ridge  (11-1, 4-0) to a 62-42 win against Myers Park on Tuesday.

Salisbury boys fall

SALISBURY — Themus Fulks scored 46 points and led North Davidson to an 88-72 Central Carolina Conference win against Salisbury on Tuesday.

“He’s a tremendous player and he got to the rim at will,” Salisbury coach Bryan Withers said. “Whether it was on a back-cut or an offensive rebound or whatever, he slipped through every crack in our defense.”

Jamarien Dalton scored 18 for the Black Knights (7-3, 5-0). R.J. Yokley had 10 rebounds, while Fulks had nine.

Salisbury got career games from Jabril Norman (21 points) and Raheim Walker (17), but it wasn’t enough.

Salisbury (8-5, 6-2)  led at the break, 37-34, but North Davidson scored 54  points in the second half.

“We’ve gotten away from what we’re good at and we’re trying to be something we’re not,” Withers said. “We’ve got to play more together than we are right now.  We’ve hit a lull, but we just have to stay the course.  I still believe we’ll be fine.”

MOUNT ULLA — East Rowan nipped West Rowan, 51-49, in the North Piedmont Conference opener for both teams on Tuesday.

East (8-6, 1-0) got 15 points from Gavin Sprinkle, 12 from Sammy Pinckney and eight from Landon Shuping.

Payne Stolsworth and Zack Brawley had 13 each for the Falcons (1-12, 0-1).

East also won by two against West Rowan in a   Christmas tournament game.

MISENHEIMER — North Rowan’s boys romped in Yadkin Valley Conference action on Tuesday at Gray Stone.

North stayed unbeaten in the YVC, overwhelming the Knights, 66-29.

The Cavaliers (10-2, 5-0) led at halftime, 35-11.

Dayjuwon Cooke and Brevin Goodlett scored 17 each for North, while Derrick Page had eight.

Goodlett lifted his career total to 958 points.

Chase Viscomi scored nine for the Knights (2-9, 1-5).

Jarron Hines scored 10 for the Raiders (1-10, 1-5).

Cinquayviun Ford led the Spartans  (6-7, 3-5) with 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting.   Sterling Charles Jr. added 10 points and five  assists.

Carson boys win

China Grove — Cole Perry scored 25 points and EJ Clark had 20 as Carson opened North Piedmont Conference play on Tuesday with a 73-55 win against North Iredell.

Carson (6-8, 1-0) got off to a good start in the North Piedmont Conference.

“We started really strong and got up by 15 in the second quarter,” Carson coach Brian Perry said. “North Iredell is not bad, they cut it down and then it went back and forth for a while. We finally got some separation in the fourth quarter.”

AJ Mauldin and Mark Spry hit key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Clark made a big bucket and Perry hit some clutch free throws as the Cougars were able to pull away.

Mauldin scored 13 for the Cougars. Jake Harris provided a boost with his defense.

Antonio Allison led North Iredell (3-10, 0-1) with 11 points.

A.L. Brown upset

CONCORD — A.L. Brown’s  lost its South Piedmont Conference opener at Central Cabarrus on Tuesday.

The Vikings (5-10) won in double overtime, 69-65.

A.L. Brown (11-2) got 17 points from Kheni Briggs, 14 from Amare Haynie and 12 each from Nick Colson and Elijah Isom.

The Wonders swept Central last season.

Local golf

Fifty-five GARS members played a Captains Choice at Corbin Hills.

Two teams tied for first place  at minus-8.

The team of Johnny Shook, Bob Niekras, David Adams and Mike Williams won the scorecard playoff over the team of Phil Cauble, Frank Masingo, Steve Masingo  and Ralph Brown.

Three teams tied for third at minus-6.

Those teams were David Scearce, Bob Turner, Les Loman and Mike Sides;

Bob Sidden, Jesse King, Larry Perrell and Bobby Miller, and Dick Hatoway, Ben Moore, Tom Dodge and Paul Rogers.

Low team handicap winners were the team of Sidden, King, Perrell and Miller.

Closest to the pin on No. 2 was won by Ernest Wagner.

The team of  Scearce, Turner, Loman, and Sides eagled the par-5 No. 6 and No. 18 holes.  The team of  Shook,  Niekras,  Adams and  Williams eagled No. 6, while Sidden, King, Perrell and Miller eagled No. 18.

Jayvee girls

Dreamah Mason, Megyn Spicer and Amoni Bryant led West Rowan to a 35-30 win against East Rowan on Tuesday.

Carson won against North Iredell on Tuesday, 46-34.  Iyonna Parker scored 12 for the Cougars. Makayla Johnson had nine.  Defensive standouts  were  Riley Isley and Camden Corley. Sydney Bradford had 13 points for North Iredell.

Men’s college hoops

Kyle Riddley scored 30 points and  Tyjarek Simmons had 26 as Pfeiffer beat Methodist on Tuesday in Fayetteville, 97-91.

Women’s hoops

UNC Pembroke lost to Lander, 84-49, on Tuesday.

Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) had nine points, six rebounds and three blocks in 20 minutes for the Braves.

Mid. school girls

Kyla Bryant scored 27 points to lead Knox to a 40-31 win against previously unbeaten Erwin.

Leah Hinceman scored 10 for Erwin, while Peyton Whicker had eight.

The teams are tied for first place at 12-1. The regular season ends Thursday.  The tournament starts on Saturday at West.
