- Mark Wineka/Salisbury Post Shields on the Merci car represent the 40 different provinces in France, which gave this 40 and 8 model car to North Carolina as a gift after World War II. The historic car — France gave one to each of the 48 states in 1949 — sits in the Roundhouse at the N.C. Transportation Museum.
Reading the paper Sunday morning, I was pleasantly surprised to see, not only the article about the gratitude train, but also about the renewed interest surrounding Marshall Ney.
As an adjunct professor at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and a retired teacher (French) from Iredell County, I have always included a cultural assignment about those two topics. I always felt that it was extremely important to be aware, become familiar and appreciate the connections that exist between our two countries.
Thank you for incorporating those topics into Sunday’s paper.
