High school girls basketball: North girls win on road; fouls hurt Hornets

MOUNT GILEAD — North Rowan’s girls got a Yadkin Valley Conference road win on Friday.
The Cavaliers beat West Montgomery, 46-31.
“It was a must win for us as far as the conference,” North coach Lamar Wilkerson said. “I was pleased with the effort. We played strong and aggressive and came out with a lot of energy.”
Natavia Taborn led North (5-6, 3-1) with 16 points. Hannah Wilkerson scored 14, while Makiya McDaniel had 10.
Taborn and McDaniel are sophomores, while Wilkerson is a freshman.
Aubree Cain contributed four points for North, while Ki’Mya Lynch had two.
The Warriors fell to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in the YVC.
North plays Salisbury at Catawba tonight at 6 p.m. The game follows the boys jayvee game and precedes the varsity boys game.
Salisbury
THOMASVILLE — Salisbury’s lost at East Davidson 57-51 in a matchup of two of the Central Carolina Conference’s best teams on Friday.
It was the first league setback for the Hornets (9-2, 6-1). East Davidson (10-1, 5-1) has lost only to South Rowan.
Skylar Grubb led the Golden Eagles with 18 points. Alli Ray scored 14 points, Bailey Grimsley had 12 points, and Keely Sentell contributed 11.
East Davidson withstood a huge all-round game by Wingate signee Bryanna Troutman. She had 14 points, 13 rebounds, seven steals and five assists.
Anayia Fulson had 13 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Rachel McCullough scored 14.
The foul situation did in the Hornets. Troutman, Fulson and Jaleiah Gibson fouled out in the fourth quarter.
East Davidson shot 31 free throws, while the Hornets shot 12. East Davidson made only one field goal in the fourth quarter but cashed in on free-throw opportunities.
Salisbury got off to a shaky start and trailed 12-4 after the first quarter.
“At the end of the day, we just have to do better because we’re beating ourselves,” Salisbury coach Lakai Brice said. “It was a learning experience and hopefully we can learn from the loss and grow.”
Salisbury takes on North Rowan at Catawba at 6 p.m. tonight in the middle leg of a triple-header.

Ashley Davis scored 15 for the Black Knights (8-3, 3-2), while Erin Coffey had 13.

Nia Daniel, headed to UNC, had 28 points, seven rebounds and five steals to lead Hickory Ridge to a 78-57 win against Rocky River on Friday.
Kennedy Calhoun scored 19 for the Bulls (10-1).
Delayzha Dixon scored 30 for Rocky River (7-2).
