In the 10th Carolinas Young Amateur golf tournament at Pinewild Country Club in Pinehurst, Michael Childress (Cannon School, Richmond) shot even-par 72 and tied for fifth in an event that was shortened to one round.

Grace  Yatawara (Salisbury, ECU) shot 76 in the women’s division and tied for 12th.

Wonders move games

A.L. Brown’s basketball games tonight against Providence will be played at Kannapolis Middle School at 1000  Virginia Dare Street in Kannapolis.

The A.L. Brown gym is  in the process of being painted.

CCC girls

Lexington won against Ledford in CCC basketball  on Thursday, 61-55.

Sophie Peoples scored 19 to lead the Yellow Jackets (8-3, 3-3).  Amarah Owens had 15, Mikenzie Harvin  scored 13, and Danasia Bray had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Lexington plays at South Rowan tonight.

Area boys

Savon Brintley scored 16 points to lead East Forsyth (7-3) to a 59-36 win against Ragsdale on Thursday.

YVC boys

Bryson Childress scored 30 points and Nalik Veasley had 13 in North Stanly’s 86-51 win against Uwharrie Charter on Wednesday.

Hoops broadcasting

Former Salisbury star Leonard Owens, who was a standout for UTEP’s basketball program, will provide color commentary for three UTEP games on ESPN+.

The UTEP men’s games scheduled for streaming are Jan. 10 versus North Texas (7 p.m. MT), Jan. 24 versus Old Dominion (7 p.m.) and Feb. 9 versus FIU (7 p.m.).

Owens appeared in 51 games, including 32 starts,   for UTEP from 2000-02.

The “Rubber Band Man” collected 186 points, 136 rebounds, 103 assists, 35 blocks and 28 steals for the 2000-01 UTEP squad that finished 23-9 and earned an NIT berth.  He started his collegiate career at Western Nebraska Community College.

Owens works for KFOX14 and KDBC CBS4 as a Digital Sales Manager.

Women’s hoops

The Pfeiffer University women’s basketball team won 65-58 against Berea at Merner Gym on Thursday afternoon.

Sydni Bickford (Robinson) led Pfeiffer with 18 points.

Hoops Shoot

The Salisbury Elks Lodge No. 699 and Salisbury Parks and Recreation will host the annual Hoop Shoot free throw contest on Sunday, Jan. 13, at 1:30 p.m. at Hall Gym.

The event is free and  is open to boys and girls, ages 8-13 (as of April 1, 2019).

Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third.

Winners in each of the six divisions advance to district competition on Saturday, Jan. 26 in Winston Salem.
