Area Sports Briefs: Davie boys win a close one

WELCOME — Davie County’s boys basketball team stayed unbeaten on Wednesday, pulling out a 60-58 victory at North Davidson.

Michael Walton’s bucket with about 18 seconds left provided the margin of victory. Walton was fouled on the shot but missed the free throw. North Davidson (4-3) had an opportunity to tie  or win at the end, but missed and Owen McCormack secured the rebound for Davie, the champion of the recent Christmas tourney at Catawba.

Davie (10-0) got 20 points from Walton and 19  from McCormack.

Themus Fulks scored 25 for the Black Knights.

Davie got nine from Walton in the first quarter as it jumped to a 19-5 lead, but North Davidson rallied in the second quarter with  the aid of numerous free throws.

DAVIE (60) — Walton 20, McCormack 19, Johnson 7, Hendrix 7, Griggs 5, Redmon 2.

N. DAVIDSON (58) — Fulks 25, L. Moore 8, Dalton 8, VanMeter 6, Yokley 4, Everhart 3, Clark 2, Swicegood 2.

Davie girls

North Davidson’s girls got 19 points from freshman Emily Hege and beat Davie, 44-33, on Wednesday in a non-conference matchup.

Ashley Davis added 12 for the Black Knights (7-3), while Courtney McMillan scored six.

Davie (4-8) got 13  points from Morgan Lewis, six from Lexie May and five each from Klara Lewis and  Olivia Tatum.

North Stanly boys

North Stanly’s boys romped against Uwharrie Charter, 86-53, on Wednesday in YVC action.

Bryson Childress had 22 points before halftime  to lead the onslaught by the Comets (6-4, 3-1).

NFL

Pittsburgh’s Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) finished his third season with 49 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

Alumni games

South Rowan alumni teams will play Carson  alumni on Saturday, Jan. 5, at Carson. Girls game is at 2 p.m., with the boys game to follow.   Admission for the fundraiser is $5.

College wrestling

UNC Pembroke’s Brandon Sloop (Carson) is ranked first in the region at 184 pounds.
