Area Sports Briefs: Lyerly strong in high-powered golf tournament

  In South Beach International Amateur golf in Florida, UNC Greensboro’s Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) shot 70-71-77-71 — 289 and tied for 44th.

The 77 came on a day with terrible wind conditions.

The tournament is rated as the fifth-best amateur golf event in the world.

College football

Army’s Sandon McCoy (A.L. Brown) rushed four times for 17 yards in a romp over Houston in the Armed Forces Bowl.

College signings

South Rowan basketball star Janiya Downs and Carson baseball slugger Luke Barringer signed with Catawba on Thursday.

William Peace freshman Madison Myers was named to the USA South All-Sportsmanship team.

High school wrestling

Carson’s Josh Vega achieved his 100th career win.

Carson placed fifth out of 24 schools in the Elizabeth Barry Memorial Clash at the Creek hosted by Mallard Creek.

Vega placed third in the tournament. Josh McCurry was fourth.

Noah Basinger, Drake Cadle and Robert Barringer were fifth. Gage Rowland was sixth, and Drew Magnuson was eighth.

East Rowan placed second in the  Clash at the Creek.

Oren Bost was the champion at 145.

Stephen Deutsch was second at 160. Tayron Frost took third at 170. Mateo Ramirez was fourth at 182.

Placing fifth were Landon Jones at 113 and Nate Burrage at 120.

Luke Heglar was eighth at 106.

  

High school hoops

A.L. Brown’s boys will be in the East Lincoln Winter Jam, along with Northwest Cabarrus.

The second-seeded Wonders (7-0) play Thursday at 1 p.m. against Forestview.

Mid. school girls

Kyla Bryant scored 16 points to lead Knox to  a win against West Rowan.

Mary Morgan scored 14, while Jamecia Huntley had 10.

Lauren Arnold led West Rowan with 15 points in a loss to Erwin.

Mid. school boys

Jayden “Juke” Harris led Knox with 14 points in a win against West Rowan.

Tyreze Miller scored 13 points. JyMikaah Wells and CJ Toomer had 10 each. Jalen Chunn added nine, while Jerome Blakeney III added six.
