LEXINGTON — Salisbury’s girls basketball team pitched a shutout in the second quarter and rolled to a 54-27 Central Carolina Conference win at Central Davidson on Thursday.

The Hornets led at halftime, 28-6.

Salisbury is off to a great start at 6-0 in the CCC and 7-0 overall.

The Hornets are the No. 3 seed for the upcoming Christmas tournament, with West Rowan (9-0) the No. 2 seed and Carson (11-0) No. 1.

Salisbury will play the 9 a.m. game on Thursday to open the tourney against No. 6 North Rowan.

Senior Bryanna Troutman again led the Hornets on Thursday, scoring 16 points and adding seven steals and three blocked shots.

Ja’kiya Brown had 10 points and four steals. Rachel McCullough scored nine. Chantal Robinson had six points and three steals. Jaleiah Gibson had six rebounds and five steals.

Carson-Davie girls

MOCKSVILLE — Carson’s girls basketball team  locked up the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Dale’s Sporting  Goods Sam Moir Christmas Classic with a 72-27 romp at Davie County.

Carson scored 57 in the first half. Most of the second half was played with a running clock.

Ellie Wilhelm and Colbie Perry combined for 10 3-pointers. Wilhelm shot 5-for-7 on 3-pointers, while Perry was 5-for-10.  Wilhelm scored a career-best 19, while Perry had 17.

“We shot the ball well, and it’s easier when that happens, but the focus was on defense tonight,” Carson coach Brooke Stouder. “Everyone had individual defensive goals to try to meet and our defense was a whole lot better than it was on Tuesday.”

Carson (11-0) matched the 2011-12 team for the best record the program has ever had before Christmas.

McKenzie Gadson had 10 points and eight rebounds. Makayla Johnson had seven rebounds in her varsity debut.

Carleigh Perry added eight points, while Hannah Isley and Taylor Conrad scored six each.

“We got a lot of production from a lot of people,” Stouder said. “What we saw tonight is that good defense will lead to offense.”

Emma Slabach scored 10 for Davie (3-5).

Carson will play in the 3 p.m. game next Thursday against No. 8 seed A.L. Brown, while No. 7 Davie plays No. 2 West Rowan in the noon game.

East girls

KANNAPOLIS — East Rowan’s girls won again on  Thursday, holding off feisty A.L. Brown, 42-34, at Bullock Gym.

“We struggled with fouls all night, but that’s no excuse for the way we played tonight,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “We’re just not playing well right now. I don’t think we’ve played well since the Concord game (Dec. 4). We’ll have to figure it out quickly.”

East (9-1) still managed to win again because of its rebounding. Mary Spry had 11 points and 15 rebounds. Zee Winford had eight points and 13 rebounds.

Adalie Harrison was 7-for-8 on free throws in the fourth quarter. Brooke Mitchell hit   key jumpers in the fourth quarter and scored 11.

Jaliah Smoutherson led the Wonders (0-7) with 11 points.

A.L. Brown will be seeded eighth for the Christmas tournament and plays Carson on Thursday at 3 p.m.

East is the No. 4 seed and takes on No. 5 South Rowan at 6 p.m.

SPENCER — West Rowan used a second-quarter spurt to pull away from North Rowan on Thursday.

The Falcons smacked the Cavaliers, 73-27, to sweep the season series.

West (9-0) enters the Christmas tournament unbeaten and as the No. 2 seed. West plays in the noon game next Thursday against seventh-seeded Davie.

North will be the No. 6 seed and will play in the 9 a.m. game.

Abigail Wilson led the Falcons with 18 points. She had 10 in the third quarter.

Mary Sobataka made four 3-pointers and scored 17.

West also got production from Cindy Connolly (10), Kia Pharr (8), Gabby Blabon (8), Whitley Arnott (7) and Taylor Poole (5).

Freshman Hannah Wilkerson had 10 for the Cavaliers (3-4), while Natavia Taborn scored six.

Girls hoops

Catawba recruit Lyrik Thorne scored 42 points for Ledford on Thursday in a 51-42 CCC win against West Davidson.

Thorne scored Ledford’s first 27 points.

UNC recruit Nia Daniel  scored 27 points and had six rebounds to lead Hickory Ridge past Mullins (S.C.),  97-44.

Lauren Ruggiero scored 17, Kennedy Calhoun had 16, and Jadah Shears had 13.

Mikenzie Harvin and Danasia Bray scored 17 each for the Yellow Jackets.

Boys hoops

Themus Fulks and Jamarien Dalton scored 25 points each for North Davidson in 90-69 CCC win over Oak Grove on Thursday.

Jacob Johnson scored 19 for the Grizzlies.

  

College women

UNC Pembroke’s women’s basketball team lost 68-60 to Georgia Southwestern.

Avery Locklear (South Rowan) had six rebounds.

Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) had four points and five rebounds.

Mid. school girls

Erwin’s girls beat West Rowan, 58-35.

Haley Dalton scored 24 points, making her two short of the 400-point club at Erwin.  She also had four blocks and eight rebounds.

Leah Hinceman had 16 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Icesis Nwafor had eight points, five steals and four rebounds for the Eagles.
