Area Sports Briefs: South splits with Ledford

Catawba commit Janiya Downs had 29 points, 14 rebounds and seven steals to lead South Rowan’s girls to a 53-42 win at Ledford on Saturday in Central Carolina Conference basketball.

South (3-3, 3-1) got 15 points from Bethany Rymer and six from Madison McGuire.

“Ledford has an outstanding guard (Catawba commit Lyrik Thorne), but we did what we needed to do today,” South coach Stacy Ellis said. “We rebounded a  lot better and defended much better than we did in Friday’s loss to West Davidson. When we’ve got three girls scoring well as we did today, we should always be in the game.”

South Rowan’s boys lost to Ledford, 73-49.

Brenden Finger scored 12 for South (1-4, 1-2). Andrew Jones had 10, and Braden Graham scored nine.

Tyler Partee, Isaac Lester and Walker Lackey led the Panthers.

Livingstone drops 2

Livingstone’s basketball teams were swept in CIAA contests at Virginia Union on Saturday.

The Virginia Union women (10-1, 2-1) put five in double figures and beat the Blue Bears, 82-64.

Daisa Harris had 17 points and nine assists for Livingstone (3-5, 0-1). Kyla Searcy scored 15. Adel Allen had 12.

Livingstone dropped the men’s game, 82-76.

Lydell Elmore scored 17 for the Blue Bears (6-3, 0-1). Roger Ray had 15, and Malik Smith added 10.

Jordan White had 25 for the Panthers (4-6, 1-1), while Demarius Pitts scored 23.

JV girls

Makayla Johnson scored 23 points to lead Carson to a 51-21 win against A.L. Brown on Friday. Iyonna Parker scored 10. Defensive standouts were Riley Isley and Camden Corley.

Mid. school girls

Knox won against Southesat, 53-35.

Kyla Bryant had 24 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists to lead the Trojans.  Jamecia Huntley had 16 points and four rebounds. Mary Morgan scored seven.

Mid. school boys

Knox won against Southeast, 70-23.

Jalen Chunn scored 15 points. Jayden “Juke” Harris and Tyreze Miller scored 10 points each.

CJ Toomer had eight points. Rasheem Wilson scored six. Isaiah Riley had five points and four rebounds.
