ELIZABETH CITY — Catawba’s men’s basketball team got another big performance from Daquan Lilly and beat Elizabeth City State, 68-51, in a non-conference game on Tuesday.

Lilly shot 8-for-11, scored 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Malik Constantine scored 16 points, and Jameel Taylor had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Catawba shot only 44.1 percent but held Elizabeth City State to 28.6-percent shooting.

Catawba (7-1) led 33-17 at halftime. Catawba led by as many as 25  points  in the second half. The Vikings never got closer than 12 after the break.

John Maynor scored 20 for the Vikings (3-6), but shot 5-for-15.

Catawba had its lowest points total of the season.

The Indians took an 86-65 win over the Vikings on Nov. 17 in Salisbury.

After exams, Catawba returns to Goodman Gym Saturday, Dec. 15, for a South Atlantic Conference contest with Mars Hill.

West Rowan girls

KANNAPOLIS — Abigial Wilson scored 26 points, and West Rowan’s undefeated girls cruised at A.L. Brown, 62-32, on Tuesday.

“We did a good job rebounding and our guards did a good job of stopping the ball,” West coach Ashley Poole said. “We made some 3-pointers and that helped loosen things up for Abigail inside. It was a good team effort.”

Taylor Poole scored 11 for the Falcons (3-0), who led 38-18 at halftime.

Jala Campbell scored 12 for the Wonders (0-3).

West plays at home for the first time this season tonight and will take on North Rowan.

GRANITE QUARRY — Grace Eagle shot 7-for-9 on 3-pointers and scored 25 points to lead East Rowan’s girls to a 64-33 win against Concord on Tuesday.

“Grace does a great job of being prepared to shoot, she’s got her feet right and her hands ready,” East coach Kevin Holland said. “We were running a play for her, and she made a bunch of them in the third quarter. The crowd was going crazy.”

Concord beat the Mustangs by 23 last season.

“We know how tough our conference is going to be, but we also know how much better we’ve gotten,” Holland said. “We’re beating some teams that beat us by a lot last season.”

East didn’t get off to a great offensive start, but it held Concord to six points in the first quarter.

East led 31-11 at halftime, and blew out the Spiders (1-3) with a big third quarter.

Adalie Harrison scored 15 for the Mustangs. Mary Spry had 13, and Caroline Houpe had 10.

“Adalie did a good job of attacking the basket,” Holland said. “Spry and Houpe had seven rebounds each. They played strong.”

Zee Winford didn’t score  but made an impact on defense.

After seasons of 4-20 and 5-20, East is off to a 4-1 start in Holland’s third season.

“We’ll take each win and try to keep getting better,” Holland said. “Compared to where we have been the past two seasons, 4-1 feels pretty good.”

Local golf

Forty GARS members played with a Captains Choice format at Corbin Hills.

The first-place team with a minus-9 was Phil Cauble, Bobby Miller, Charles Sargent and Jim Brown.

The second-place team at minus-8 was David Scearce, Larry Luther, Ben Moore and Linn Safley.

The team of  Ray Pope, Tommy Lambert, John Cress and Larry Perrell tied the team of Larry Petrea, Gary Schenk, John Daniels and Tommy Ellis for third place with minus-7.

Closest to the pin on the No. 2 hole was won by Ernest Wagner.

Longest putt on No. 9  was made by Scearce.

Salisbury Academy

The Salisbury Academy boys basketball team defeated Statesville Montessori, 50-45.

Jaiden Colbert led the scoring with 22 points. Deuce Walker dropped in 10 points. Damian Brandon and Harrison McCall contributed six each.

All-YVC football

North Rowan linebacker Nautica Patterson was named co-defensive player of the year for Yadkin Valley Conference football.

North lineman Benjamin Caldwell was named all-conference on offense and defense.

Also making All-YVC from North were DBs  Tyzai Lyles, Jaharian Graham, Zay Davis and Spencer Everhart, defensive lineman Malachi Turner,   linebacker Jordan Goodine, running back Malcolm Wilson, quarterback Willis Mitchell and receivers Denerio Robinson and Quintous Smith.

All-SPC soccer

A.L. Brown’s Wynston Johnson was named player of the year for South Piedmont Conference soccer.

Central Cabarrus’ Andre Rojas was named keeper of the year.

Concord’s Todd Tinsley is the coach of the year.

Also making All-SPC from A.L. Brown were Asunscion Gonzalez, Jonathan Duarte, Moises Garvia, Axel Martinez and Alex Palomares.

Northwest Cabarrus’ Zach Roux and Ricco Sastoque made All-SPC.

Jayvee boys

A.L. Brown beat West Rowan on Tuesday, 45-36.

Sam Wood scored 14 for the Falcons.

Area girls

Lexington beat Oak Grove, 52-34, on Tuesday  in a CCC game.

Mikenzie Harvin had 14 points and seven steals.  Danasia Bray  had 12 points and 14 rebounds.
