College basketball: Catawba women fall

NEWBERRY, S.C. —   Catawba’s women’s basketball team did a lot of things right on Wednesday in its South Atlantic Conference opener at Newberry.

The Indians enjoyed major advantages in the turnover battle (25-16), offensive rebounds (20-6) and second-chance points (18-2), but they lost the game at the 3-point line where they were outscored 30-9.

Catawba shot just 3-for-21 on 3-pointers, while undefeated Newberry was 10-for-17 from deep and won 63-52.

Catawba had 22 more field-goal attempts, but shot 30.9 percent from the field.

Taisha DeShazo led the Indians (2-3, 0-1) with 15 points. Elizabeth Webb scored 12, and former A.L. Brown star Shemya Stanback scored 10.

Shelby Britton hit five 3-pointers and scored 25 points for the Wolves (6-0, 2-0).

Catawba did a good job defensively against Meg Essick, the reigning national player of the week, and held her to eight points.

Newberry built a 28-19 halftime lead and led by as many as 15 in the third quarter.  Catawba got within seven points a few times down the stretch.

Catawba returns to action at home  on Saturday afternoon against Tusculum.
