Carson basketball is hosting a tournament Friday and Saturday.

The tentative schedule:

Friday’s games

4 — Girls, North Rowan vs. North Hills

5:30 — Boys, North Rowan vs. North Hills

7 — Girls, NW Cabarrus vs. Carson

8:30 — Boys, NW Cabarrus vs. Carson

Saturday’s games

1 — Girls, NW Cabarrus vs. North Rowan

2:30 — Boys, NW Cabarrus vs. North Rowan

4 — Girls, Cox Mill vs. Carson

5:30 — Boys, Carson vs. North Hills

South Rowan hosts East Rowan tonight in the first intracounty games of the season.

  

College softball

N.C. State’s Peyton Greene (West Rowan) recently was named national pitcher of the week for club teams. She pitched nine innings in two wins against Coastal Carolina.

Women’s basketball

Amani Ajayi (East Rowan) is averaging 10.8 points and 6.8 rebounds for Averett.

Alex Allen (Carson) is averaging 13.2 points and 6.0 rebounds for Lynchburg and is shooting 52.7 percent from the field.

Aliyah Farmer (North Rowan) is averaging 6.8 points and 4.3 rebounds for UNC Pembroke. Avery Locklear (South Rowan) averages 5.8 points and 4.0 rebounds for the Braves.

Tyzarea Alexander (Salisbury) averages 6.0 points and 4.2 rebounds for Methodist.

Sydni Bickford scored 11 points for Pfeiffer in Monday’s 82-46 exhibition loss at Gardner-Webb.

Newberry’s Meg Essex is the SAC Player of the Week. Catawba plays at Newberry on Wednesday.

Men’s basketball

Jamarius Hairston (Carson) scored eight points for Lander in Saturday’s loss to Tusculum.

Isaac Johnson scored 19 points to lead  Appalachian to a a 91-64 victory over Winston-Salem State on Monday evening inside the Holmes Center.

  Lenoir-Rhyne guard Djibril Diallo has been named the SAC Player of the Week.

Livingstone hosts Benedict at 7:30 p.m. at New Trent Gym on Thursday.

  

Overseas basketball

Keshun Sherrill (West Rowan) is averaging 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for the Den Bosch New Heroes in the Dutch Basketball League.

College football

Appalachian State’s MyQuon Stout (Carson) made three tackles and knocked down a pass in Saturday’s win against Troy.

After an exciting home win against Wingate,  Lenoir-Rhyne (12-1) plays  at Valdosta State (11-0) on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a regional final.

North Carolina A&T stayed on top of the BOXTOROW  HBCU media and coaches polls.

CFL

Romar Morris (Salisbury) helped Calgary lead the CFL in return yards this season.

He missed Sunday’s Grey Cup win against Ottawa with a torn Achilles tendon.

Local golf

Hank Robins made a rare hole-in-one on the 232-yard No. 9 hole at the  Country Club of Salisbury.

He used a 3-iron to accomplish the feat.

In McCanless Couples play,  Calvin Smith and Ralph & Pam Carver took first place.

Gene & Mary Seaford and Susan Wydner held on to second place.

Gene Seaford had longest putt.

East Rowan Y

Register through Dec. 22 for Little Shooters basketball and boys basketball at the  Saleeby-Fisher YMCA, East Rowan Branch.

Boys basketball is for ages 7-14. Little Shooters is an introduction to the agme for ages 4-6.

Practice starts Jan. 7. Season starts Jan. 19.

Catawba softball

Catawba softball will offer a winter training camp on Jan. 27 at Whitley Field.

The camp will be open to girls in grades 9-12.

Sessions will consist of college style practice drills with the Catawba College coaching staff and team with each player running through offensive and defensive drills during their position session.

Sessions are based on position with the first session being for pitchers and catchers from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. The second session will be for outfielders and infielders and will start at noon and run until 3 pm.

Cost for one session is $60 or $95 for both sessions.

Registration deadline is Jan. 9.
