Area Sports Briefs: DeBose may get first start for Hokies

Virginia Tech sports information is listing redshirt freshman Zion DeBose (North Rowan) as a starter at defensive end for Saturday afternoon’s home game with Miami.

It would be the first start for DeBose, who would be replacing injured  Houshun Gaines.

Women’s basketball

Catawba’s game at Lees-McRae was postponed to Monday at 5 p.m. due to weather concerns.

Catawba plays at home at 6 p.m.  against Fayetteville State on Saturday.

Pfeiffer romped to a 91-42 win against Carolina Christian on Thursday.

The Falcons led 29-2 after the first quarter.

Khaila Hall (West Rowan) scored five points for Longwood in Wednesday’s loss to Wagner.

College volleyball

For the ninth time in the last 11 seasons, Wingate has reached the Southeast Regional semifinals.

The Bulldogs (30-1) swept Emmanuel on Thursday in the first round of the regional at Wingate.

College football

Catawba football finishes the season with a home game against UNC Pembroke on Saturday afternoon at 1:05 p.m.

Mid. school girls

  Erwin’s girls beat China Grove 46-15.

Leah Hinceman led the Eagles with 16 points. Haley Dalton and Payton Whicker scored eight eight each. Icesis Nwafor added six.

High school wrestling

Davie County rolled to a 64-18 win against Wilkes Central on Thursday.

Cody Taylor, Jack Jarvis, Isaac Webb, Matthew King and Jesus Olmedo had pins for the War Eagles.

College soccer

Catawba sophomore midfielder Jovana Sanchez was named second team all-region.

  Sanchez led the Indians with six goals, seven assists and 19 points.
