CONCORD — A.L. Brown won another “Bell Game” from Concord on Saturday, outscoring the Spiders, 54-35, for its  fourth straight victory in the heated rivalry.

This was the 89th Concord-Kannapolis battle, and it was the highest-scoring one in series history.

A.L. Brown built a 26-0 lead early at Bailey Stadium behind quarterback Jordan Medley and kept the Spiders (1-10, 0-5) at arm’s length in the South Piedmont Conference contest.

A.L. Brown (6-5, 2-3) will have another non-losing season, a remarkable streak that’s been maintained every year since the 1977 squad went 3-7.

By the middle of the second quarter, Medley had two rushing TDs and had thrown scoring passes to Jose Vargas (50 yards) and Antonio Knight for a 26-0 advantage.

Concord fought back to 26-15 by halftime.

Jaron Cooper’s 12-yard scoring run, Steven Robinson’s 75-yard TD,  Nick Lyerly’s 40-yard dash down the sideline, and Knight’s second TD kept the Wonders on top.

In a wild second half, the closest Concord got was 33-21 late in the third quarter.

Concord finished the season, while the Wonders will be somewhere in the 3AA bracket, on the road in the first round.

Northwest Cabarrus beat Cox Mill, 33-30, in overtime on Saturday to win the SPC title.

The teams were tied at the end of regulation, 27-all. Tyrese Blake scored a 24-yard touchdown for Northwest with 1:38 left, as  the Trojans rallied from behind.

Cox Mill had the ball first in overtime, but was held to a field goal by Carson Burt.

The Trojans (11-0, 5-0) then scored a touchdown to win. Sam Walker  threw a pass to  Cam Saunders on third-and-goal.

HS cross country

South Rowan sophomore Noah Julian ran 17:09 for 19th place in the 2A State Championships held in Kernersville on Saturday.

In the 2A girls race, South freshman Bethany Rymer ran 20:36 and placed 24th.

Davie County’s Clay Summers was 31st in the 4A boys race, clocking 16:42. Davie’s Trey Raisbeck was 78th in 17:21.

In the 4A girls race, Davie’s Emerson Frantz was 37th in 20:03.

In the 1A girls race, Gray Stone’s Jean Holman was 25th in 21:59.

In the 3A boys race, West Rowan’s Thomas Waldo was 47th in 17:14. Carson’s Zac Barbee was 82nd in 17:37.

Carson’s Taylor Conrad ran 21:48 and was 112th in the 3A girls race.

High school soccer

A.L. Brown beat Statesville, 2-0, in the first round of the 3A playoffs on Saturday.

High school volleyball

West Davidson was swept by Currituck in the 2A state title game in Raleigh on Saturday.

College cross country

Both Catawba teams placed fifth in Saturday’s South Atlantic Conference Championships.

College volleyball

Catawba swept Newberry on Saturday and finished eighth in the SAC. Micah Ensor had 12 kills. Morgan Hester (Carson) had 33 assists.
