Area Sports Briefs: Cougars outscore East in soccer

Carson won against East Rowan, 5-4, on Wednesday in North Piedmont Conference soccer.

Reuben Leslie had two goals and an assist for the Mustangs.  Alex Kalogeromitros had a goal and two assists.  Jaxon Mastranunzio scored a goal. Ben Shoemaker made 11 saves.

Weather issues knocked out Wednesday’s scheduled Thomasville-Salisbury matchup in the CCC.

The Salisbury-South Rowan match on Monday was stopped with 12 minutes left with the teams tied 1-all.

 Prep volleyball

The East Rowan volleyball team will host a “Serve for the Cure”   game on Oct. 2 when the Mustangs host Carson to raise funds for the fight against cancer.

East is at home today against West Rowan.

Carson plays at North Iredell in another North Piedmont Conference matchup today.

The biggest match today is at West Davidson as one of the top teams in the Central Carolina Conference hosts first-place South Rowan.

  

Prep cross country

South Rowan cross country teams won a three-team meet with Ledford and Thomasville on Tuesday.

Noah Julian (17:58), Ari Moya, Ian Waugh  finished 1-2-3 to lead South’s boys.

Bethany Rymer (21:17), Madison Henry, Madison McGuire finished 2-3-4 to lead the SR girls.

Ledford’s Sheccid Ontiveros won the girls race.

Prep tennis

East Rowan lost to North Iredell, 7-2, on Tuesday in North Piedmont Conference tennis.

Kristen Brady won at No. 1 singles for the Mustangs.  Sarah Margaret Dyer won a close match at No. 5 singles.

College soccer

A one-hour lightning delay in the first half, coupled with another lightning strike in the 53rd minute, signaled the end to the UNC Pembroke soccer team’s contest at Catawba on Wednesday.

The game was officially recorded as a no contest as it did not reach the 70-minute mark required by the NCAA.

Catawba’s men lost at Mars Hill, 6-2, in a SAC matchup on Wednesday.

Hunter Faust and Borja  Gaspar scored goals for the Indians.

College volleyball

William Peace freshman Madison Myers (West Rowan) had four kills, three blocks and three digs in Wednesday’s loss to Christopher Newport.

William Peace is 8-4.

Livingstone (3-6) swept Claflin on Wednesday. Jekisha Rhymes had 12 kills. Alexis Williams had 13 digs.

Mid. school football

Knox won against Corriher-Lipe, 35-8.

JyMikaah Wells had an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and two 50-yard runs for touchdowns and also played a strong defensive game for the Trojans.

Quarterback Jerome Blakeney III had a 10-yard touchdown run and a 2-point  conversion.

Zyquavion Rankin had  five carries  for 55 yards and a touchdown.  Amari Johnson had a 2-point conversion, as well as a strong defensive game.

Jalen Chunn, Anthony Dodd and Tyreze Miller were defensive leaders. Miller intercepted three passes.

Dodd caused a fumble and also had a 35-yard carry.
