Area Sports Briefs: Mooresville wins Thursday football contest

Mooresville’s football team stayed undefeated on Thursday with a 38-7 non-conference romp against South Iredell.

Hunter Deberardino was 12-for-21 passing for 273 yards and three touchdowns for the Blue Devils (4-0).  Justin Torrence caught five passes for 159 yards and two TDS.

North Iredell edged West Iredell on Thursday, 10-9.

West Iredell  (2-3) missed a third-quarter PAT kick. North Iredell (2-3) was able to drive for a field goal and scored a TD after a fumble recovery on the West Iredell 2-yard-line.

West Iredell quarterback Eli Kitchens completed 20 of his 29 passes for 183 yards.

In South Rowan’s 50-0 loss to Ledford on Wednesday, the Raiders (1-3, 1-1 CCC) turned the ball over eight times, including six interceptions.  The  Raiders also lost two fumbles and had two punts blocked. Ledford’s defense recorded a pick-six and a safety.

Ledford led  21-0 after a quarter and by 37-0 at halftime.

Jaden Antone and David Wetherington led Ledford’s offense with two rushing TDs apiece.

Derek Brown  had a fumble recovery and an interception to lead Ledford’s defense.

South plays at fifth-ranked North Davidson next week, while Ledford (3-1, 2-0) takes on Thomasville.

College football

Grayson Willingham threw four touchdown passes for Lenoir-Rhyne (2-1, 1-0)  in a 59-27 South Atlantic Conference romp against Mars Hill on Thursday.

Juwan Houston (West Rowan) had a catch for 24 yards for Guilford in a 91-61 loss to Davidson on Thursday.

High school tennis

South Rowan won against East Davidson, 9-0, in a Central Carolina Conference match on Wednesday.

Kristen Minehart, Lauren Shell, Brianna Weatherwax, Jamie Minehart, Emma Leazerand Jennifer Mysayakhom won singles matches for the Raiders (5-6).

Winning Doubles teams were K. Minehart/Shell, J. Minehart/Weatherwax, and Leazer/Mysayakhom.

South is scheduled to play at North Davidson on Monday.

Salisbury stayed undefeated with  a 9-0 CCC win against Thomasville on Wednesday.

Emma Nianouris, Meredith Burton, Margaret Truman, Abby Campion, Skye Mowery and Sophie Chmiel rolled in singles.

Nianouris/Burton, Thurman/Mowery and Campion/Chmiel won doubles matches.

Salisbury is scheduled to play at Lexington on Monday.

Minor leagues

LAKEWOOD, N.J. ­— In gloom and mist, the Lexington Legends beat the Lakewood BlueClaws, 6-3, on Thursday and took a 2-1 lead in the South Atlantic League championship series.

There were nine errors  in the contest.

Lakewood hit into a double play in the fifth with the bases loaded.

Korean baseball

Jerry Sands (Catawba) had three RBIs for Nexen on Wednesday.

He also had RBIs on Sunday and Tuesday.
