Area Sports Briefs: Big victory for Carson volleyball; South and West also winners

Mallory Weast had 19 kills, 28 digs and four blocks to lead Carson’s volleyball team to a 22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-15 and 15-8 North Piedmont Conference win against North Iredell on Tuesday in the league opener for both teams.

Carson (9-1) got 37 assists and seven aces from Grace Thomas. Katie Blackwell had two aces and eight kills. Jaden Vaughn had nine kills and two blocks. Kary Hales had 25 digs and received serve 32 times.

South Rowan stayed tied for first place with a 21-25, 25-14, 25-22 and 25-21 Central Carolina Conference win against Central Davidson on Tuesday.

Anna Rymer had 26 assists for the Raiders (9-3, 7-1). Janiya Downs had 20 kills and eight digs.  Kira Rymer had 20 kills and 12 digs. Payton Black had 18 digs. Caroline Brooks had four aces.

West Rowan opened NPC play with a 25-4, 25-13 and 25-23 win against East  Rowan on Tuesday.

Tori Hester had nine kills, 14 digs and eight aces. KK Dowling had eight kills and three aces. Ava Link had five aces, six kills and 13 assists. Allison Ennis had 14 digs, 13 assists and three aces.

Baleigh Hill had 14 digs for the Mustangs and received serve 27 times.

Salisbury lost to East Davidson on Monday in a CCC match —  25-19, 25-14 and 25-19.

Salisbury bounced back to win on Tuesday against North Davidson — 25-18, 25-17 and 25-12.

JV volleyball

Carson lost to North Iredell—  14-25, 26-24 and 20-25.

Madison Berry had 11 kills. Jillian Dunn had 25 digs and  29 serve-receives. Say Tim Thomas had 15 digs. Tate Barger had 27 assists.

West Rowan won against East Rowan, 25-12 and 25-12.

Emma Gaeta had five kills and 13 assists. Miranda Miller had three kills and six digs. Megyan Anglin had four kills. Regan Roakes had seven digs.

South Rowan’s jayvees  (6-6, 4-4) lost to Central Davidson 25-11 and 25-17.

Makali Strong had six digs.  Mckinley Faw   had eight digs.Kendall Walter had six digs.

Prep girls tennis

West Rowan’s girls tennis team won a home North Piedmont Conference tennis match against East Rowan on Tuesday.

West (9-0, 3-0 NPC) stayed undefeated.

Payton Holt, Madison Smith, Lacy Waggoner, Skylar Jahnke, Mira White, and Kelsie Crider won singles matches.

West’s winning doubles team were Smith/Crider and Jahnke/White.

Sage Fann/Madison Brown won No. 3 doubles for the Mustangs.

West plays  South Iredell at Caldwell Park in Statesville today in a battle for first place.

Prep golf

East Rowan won Monday’s North Piedmont Conference girls golf match held at McCanless.

Carmen Fraley shot 36 to lead the Mustangs. Camryn Corriher shot 40, while Victoria Lewis shot 45.

East’s 121 was 18 shots better than second-place South Iredell.

Carson tied for third with North Iredell at 161. Savanna Charles shot 52 to lead the Cougars.

Prep soccer

Salisbury lost to Ledford, 2-0, in Central Carolina Conference soccer action on  Tuesday.

Salisbury struggled again in back-to-back contests despite playing all 21 members of the team on Monday.

“We were out-worked, out-hustledand out-played  for a good portion of the match,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said.

Ledford converted on two of three shots on frame.

Salisbury (9-2, 5-1) is scheduled to play two more CCC games next week.

College volleyball

Wingate played its first five-set volleyball match of the season Tuesday night, prevailing at Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action.

Wingate (9-0, 2-0) won 25-23, 24-26, 25-14 and 22-25.

Morgan Hester (Carson) had 49 assists for the Indians (4-8, 0-1). Micah Ensor and Jade Brooks had 12 kills each.

Local golf

Fifty-eight GARS members played at Warrior on Monday.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Gary Schenk with a net of 67.30. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Jesse King with a net of 64.83.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Mike Sides with a net of 63.86. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Bert Bollinger with a net of 65.17.

Low net score was a 74 by Larry Petrea. Low gross score was by Mike Sides.

Clive Mahaffey, 83, shot an 82. Buddy Barger, 84, shot an 82. JC Ritchie, 93, shot an 86.

Lynn Shook eagled the par-4 No. 14 hole.

The Corbin Hills women had a NCWGA State Handicap Play Day.

Beth Calhoun was the winner of the First Flight. Azalee Huneycutt won gross, while Faye Cline won net.

In the Second Flight,  Becky Isenhour was the gross winner. Bev Cobb won net.

Mid. school tennis

Erwin  defeated Mooresville Middle 8-1, in its first tennis match of the  season on Tuesday on the Erwin courts.

Audrey Ward, Cindy Peterson,  Anna Hedenskog, Abbey Jarem, Landyn Kesler and Allie Martin won singles matches for the Eagles.

Ward/Peterson and Hedenskog-Jarem won doubles matches for Erwin.

Sacred Heart soccer

Sacred Heart’s varsity soccer team defeated Salisbury Academy, 5-0.

Drew Hansen had a hat trick for the Dolphins.

Kyna Zaldivar and John David Bonilla  had a goal each. Keeper Jeffrey Sithong played solid in goal. Luis Avilez and Cooper Fleeman played tough defense.

  The Dolphins  also defeated Immaculate Heart of Mary (from High Point), 7-3, in a conference match.

Hansen had another hat trick. Bonilla had goals. AJ Flynn and David Austin had a goal each. Nick Loeblein and Luis Avilez were standouts on defense.

  Sacred Heart defeated  Hickory Christian Academy, 7-0.

Zaldivar scored four goals.  Bonilla, Avilez and   Hansen had a goal each. Fleeman and Loeblein led the defense.

College football

N.C. A&T was a unanimous No. 1 this week in the  HBCU media poll.

MLB

Whit Merrifield (Davie) will be one of the MLB players on an all-star team that will tour Japan in November. Atlanta Braves rookie phenom Ronald Acuna Jr. will be on the team.

, Kansas City Royals second baseman Whit Merrifield, and Los Angeles Dodgers super-utility player Chris Taylor join the aforementioned trio, along with Philadelphia Phillies teammates Rhys Hoskins and Carlos Santana.
