Area Sports Briefs: South strong in Friday Night Lights Festival

South Rowan, West Rowan and Salisbury were among 80 teams that competed in the Friday Night Lights Festival in Kernersville.

In the boys invitational race, South Rowan placed 13th in a strong field.

Sophomore Noah Julian led the Raiders, placing 14th in 17:46.

Ari Moya ran  18:58 and was 64th. Nolan Miller (75th), Ian Waugh (88th) and Trent Rivers were the scorers for the Raiders.

West Rowan was 28th in team scoring.

Damian Ackman ran 18:38 and finished 52nd to lead the Falcons. Luke Harrison was 93rd in 19:21.

Michael Lowry ran 19:33 and was 103rd to lead the Hornets.

Marvin Ridge won the team competition. Alexander Central senior Cooper Castellaw was the individual winner in 16:40.

In the girls invitational race, South freshman Bethany Rymer paced Rowan runners. She was 17th in 21:43. South’s Madison McGuire was 62nd in 23:21. South didn’t post a team score.

West Rowan’s girls were 19th. Megyn Spicer led the Falcons. She was 65th in 23:29.

Salisbury couldn’t post a team score, but Leah Cressler was 43rd in 22:42 and Ellen Simons was 47th in 22:57.

Minor leagues

The Kannapolis Intimidators ended their  season on Friday.

Spencer Howard pitched a no-hitter, leading the Lakewood BlueClaws to a 1-0 victory over the  Intimidators to sweep a first-round South Atlantic League playoff series.

The game’s only run came in the bottom of the sixth inning. After singling, Jose Antequera advanced to second on a groundout and then scored on a single by Simon Muzziotti.

The BlueClaws recorded their 24th shutout of the year.

Missoula/Hillsboro catcher Zac Almond  (Catawba) was named the Minor League Player of the Month for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

  

Mid. school tennis

The North Rowan Middle School boys tennis team defeated Knox, 6-3.

Winning in singles for the Mavericks were Noah Williams, Lucas Berg and Luke Hicks.

Winning in doubles were Williams/Berg, Faris Khatib/Hicks  and Michael Dunn/Anders Thompson.

College volleyball

Lindsay Elmore (Carson) had three kills for Queens in a 3-0 loss to USC Aiken on Saturday.

Braelyn Faust (West Rowan) had six kills in Lenoir-Rhyne volleyball’s sweep of Mount Olive on Saturday.

Michaela White (Carson) had 13 assists and nine digs in UNC Wilmington’s win against Virginia on Friday.

Morgan Hester (Carson) had 57 assists for Catawba in Friday losses to Augusta and Barton.

College football

Kortez Weeks (West Rowan) had seven catches for 114 yards in Elon’s 45-7 romp against Furman on Saturday.

Sewanee’s Wesley Porter (East Rowan) had eight tackles and a pass breakup in Saturday’s 47-14 loss to Washington & Lee.

Virginia Tech’s Zion DeBose (North Rowan) was in on five tackles in a 62-17 win against William & Mary on Saturday.

MyQuon Stout (Carson) made two tackles for Appalachian State in a 45-9 win against Charlotte on Saturday night.

Chris Reynolds (Davie County) threw for 108 yards for Charlotte on 12 completions.
