Town of East Spencer hosts Community Day
10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8
Enjoy community-building, health screenings, cooking demonstrations, live music by Vacynze, T-Jam and the Nerdy Blues, free food, a bounce house for kids, door prizes and more.
Also, come check out the new community garden space. The event, in partnership with Health Rowan, will be held at 110 S. Long St., the old Rowan-Salisbury Administration Building.

The Rowan Museum History Club hosts “The World Trade Center, My Story” presented by Andrew Walker
7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11
Andrew was born in Leeds, England, graduated from the University of Birmingham. He worked as a civil engineer for 40 years before retiring as president of Nicholson Construction, a nationwide specialist geotechnical design/build contractor that specialized in challenging projects from re-leveling the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas during construction, to repairing nuclear submarine pens in Connecticut. They were called to assist at the World Trade Center immediately after the attack of 9/11 and carried out work there for many years.
He and his family became US citizens in 2004 as a direct response to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. In retirement he works for his wife at Across the Pond Bed & Breakfast, just a few blocks from the Museum.
Andrew’s presentation will be followed by a Q&A period. The Rowan History Club is open to all; there are no dues or admission fees, and refreshments are served. The Rowan Museum is located at 202 N. Main St., 704-633-5946, www.rowanmuseum.org

Kannapolis History Associates present Mark Spitzer
7 p.m. Monday Sept 10:
Hear an update on ongoing research and an overview of NCRC’s economic and community development initiatives by Mark Spitzer, vice president of operations and lead executive officer of Castle & Cooke North Carolina, the developers of the North Carolina Research Campus (NCRC).
Mark explains how he works closely with the NCRC scientists and commercial partners to advance the campus mission of empowering human health and well-being through scientific advances in our understanding of the role played by nutrition, agriculture and lifestyle. Mark also oversees Castle & Cooke’s real estate, recreational and hospitality operations in and around Kannapolis. Mark will present an update on the NCRC, highlight ongoing research and give an overview of the NCRC’s economic and community development initiatives.

Book by Allan Knee, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, and music by Jason Howland.
Based on Louisa May Alcott’s life, “Little Women” follows the adventures of sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March. Jo is trying to sell her stories for publication, but the publishers are not interested — her friend, Professor Bhaer, tells her that she has to do better and write more from herself. Begrudgingly taking this advice, Jo weaves the story of herself and her sisters and their experience growing up in Civil War America.

Performance dates are Nov. 1-3 and 8-10 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $22.90 and student tickets are $10; available in September at www.leestreet.org or 704-310-5507.

Waterworks Fall Exhibition features three solo artists using a variety of media as a metaphor to weave together the fabric of our history, culture, and personal relationships.
Admission is always free at Waterworks, located at 123 East Liberty St. Galleries are open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. -2 p.m.
Meet the artists at the opening reception on Sept. 14, 5:30-8 p.m. A special presentation will be made at 6:15 p.m. Light refreshments will be served; no charge to attend.
