Area Sports Briefs: Soccer wins for Salisbury, East; South volleyball ties for 1st

Salisbury’s soccer team got back on the right track with a highly contested 2-1 Central Carolina Conference victory against Lexington on Tuesday.

Jack Fisher scored and had an assist on Luke Holland’s game-winning goal for the Hornets (7-1, 3-0).

“Both teams had sections of considerable advantage and wasted opportunities,” SHS coach Matt Parrish said.

Next up for the Hornets is another tough CCC contest Wednesday night at defending champion Central Davidson.

Game times are 5:30 and 7 p.m.

Alex Kalogeromitros scored five goals to lead East Rowan to a 9-6 soccer win against West Montgomery on Tuesday.

Rueben Leslie scored three goals. James Lomax had three assists.

Landon Ketchie had a goal. Kalogeromitros, Mario Lecca and Jaxon Mastranunzio had assists.

Adrian Solano scored the only goal of the match as North Davidson beat South Rowan, 1-0, in Central Carolina Conference play on Tuesday.

Prep tennis

Salisbury stayed undefeated  on Tuesday with a 9-0  Central Carolina Conference win against East Davidson.

Emma Nianouris, Meredith Burton, Abby Campion, Skye Mowery, Sophie Chmiel and Margaret Thurman were winners for the Hornets (8-0, 7-0).

Prep volleyball

South Rowan’s volleyball team moved into a four-way tie for first place in the CCC with Tuesday’s  25-19, 25-21 and 25-20 win against West Davidson.

Janiya Downs had 14 kills for the Raiders (6-3, 4-1).  Kira Rymer had 14 kills and 15 digs; Payton Black  had 26 digs. Anna Rymer had 21 assists.

West Rowan fell for the first time on Tuesday, losing at Davie County — 27-25, 11-25, 25-22, 25-25 and 15-12.

West is 9-1. Davie is 7-1.

Tori Hester had 32 kills and 25 digs for the Falcons. KK Dowling had 20 digs. Allison Ennis had 15 digs and 24 assists.  Ava Link had 21 assists. Hannah Pratt had 17 digs.

Jayvee volleyball

South Rowan lost to West Davidson 25-16 and 25-14 on Tuesday.

Kali Nelson had 13 digs for the Raiders (5-4, 3-2). Makali Strong  had 12 digs.Kendall Walter had 10 digs.

SAL baseball

The Kannapolis Intimidators host Lakewood in a playoff game tonight at 7:05 p.m.

Tickets are $3.

A raffle will be held for 2019 season tickets.

SAC football

Players of the week are Wingate running back Domineke McNeill, Newberry linebacker Joe Blue and  Wingate punter Chris Birozes.

College soccer

  Freshman Katie Webb scored off a corner kick six minutes into overtime to lift Catawba (2-0) to a 1-0 victory over host USC Aiken in women’s soccer action on Monday afternoon at Pacer Pit.

Local golf

Three flights of Corbin Hills women participated in a low net event.

Beth Calhoun won the First Flight, with Susan Houston second.

Cathy Fleming won the Second Flight, with Becky Isenhour second.

Sheryl Johnson won the Third Flight. Bev Cobb was second.

Susan Morris had low putts.

Baseball/softball clinic

  The City of Salisbury will host a Mayor Playball Clinic on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 9 until noon at  Newman Park.

The free clinic is for boys and girls ages 7-15.

The clinic conducted by Catawba’s baseball and softball teams.
