NFL

Linebacker Keion Adams (Salisbury) made a fumble recovery for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Thursday’s 39-24 win against Carolina.

Adams, a seventh-round pick in 2017 who missed all last season with a shoulder injury,  was a somewhat surprising cut by the Steelers on Saturday when the roster was trimmed to 53. Adams led the Steelers in QB pressures during the preseason, but didn’t make as much of an impact on special teams as he or the team had hoped.

Adams apparently was beaten out for a roster spot by rookie Ola Adeniyi.

When he was cut, Adams could have been claimed by any other NFL team, but he was not. The Steelers re-signed him and the 23-year-old will be part of their 10-man practice squad where he’ll continue to develop and will be available in case injuries strike the linebacking corps.

Chris Reynolds (Davie County) passed for 267 yards and a touchdown as Charlotte opened the football season with a 34-10 win against Fordham.

Tywun Rivens (Salisbury) made three tackles for Campbell in Thurday’s 49-26  win against Chowan.

St. Andrews’ Kacey Otto (West Rowan) carried 15 times for 49 yards and completed a pass for 15 yards in Saturday’s 38-21 loss to Southeastern University.

Wesley Porter (East Rowan) had two pass breakups and returned a kickoff 28 yards in Sewanee’s 43-10 win against Kenyon on Saturday.

Army’s Sandon McCoy (A.L. Brown) had two carries for 16 yards in Friday’s 34-14 loss to Duke.

 

Prep cross county

Carson’s girls won the Chick-fil-A Invitational at Salisbury Community Park on Saturday.

Carson’s Abby Lee was first in 20:54. Taylor Conrad (2nd), Lani Isley (7th), Kimberly Barrera (8th) and Megan Deal (10th) were the other top runners for the Cougars.

Carson’s boys finished second. TJ Jones (7th) and John Sokolowski (9th) led the Cougars.

 

 

Prep volleyball

East Rowan libero Baleigh Hill committed to Barton College.

Hill has 145 digs in six matches this season.

 

Local golf

Aron Burleson made a hole-in-one on No. 7 at Crescent on Thursday.

He hit a driver from the white tees. The shot was witnessed by Shelton Harper and Jim Hardister.

Two teams tied for the championship in the Nazareth Child & Family Connection annual fundraising golf tournament, but the big winners were the residents of Nazareth.

The tournament, held Aug. 28 at Lexington Golf Club, raised more than $25,000 to aid various programs at Nazareth.

Two teams from Davidson County shot 52s to deadlock for the win in the Captains Choice tournament.

Denise Durham, Eddy Barney, Marc Frye and Lee Crisp were members of one of the winning teams, while Hugo Crigler, Robert Swing, Kenny Newsome and Josh Smith comprised the second team.

Sponsors of the tournament included Swing Transport, Inc., CBL Financial Service, Inc./Raymond James, Jim Williams, Nazareth Community Church, Franklin Street Partners, Inc. and Fay Fisher.

College men’s soccer

Pfeiffer opened the season with a 3-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan in Newport News, Va., on Friday afternoon.

Catawba was shut out by Erskine, 1-0, in its season opener on Saturday.

Thursday’s scheduled opener was canceled due to lightning.

 

College women’s soccer

Megan Bolick (Carson) made two saves for Barton in a 2-0 win against Coker to open the season.

Pfeiffer  opened the  season with a 1-0 loss at Swarthmore College on Friday afternoon.

 

College volleyball

TAMPA, Fla. — Catawba dropped a pair of matches on Friday at the Courtyard Marriott/Terrace Hotel Volleyball Classic at the Martinez Athletic Center. The Catawba Indians fell to West Texas A&M and 25th-ranked Tampa.

Catawba opened with a three-set loss to West Texas A&M. Allie Grubb had nine kills. Allison Benton had 17 digs. Morgan Hester (Carson) had 22 assists and six kills.

Grubb had eight kills in the loss to Tampa. Hester had 19 assists.

Catawba lost to Florida Southern, 3-1, on Saturday. Grubb had nine kills. Hester had 30 assists and 18 digs.

Catawba (4-4) swept Wilmington (Del.) on Saturday. Macy Eidenberger had 11 kills, and Kimberly Hurtado had 10. Hester had 28 assists.

Michaela White (Carson) had 58 assists for UNC Wilmington as the Seahawks beat Norfolk State, Penn and Georgetown in the Hoya Invitational.

Braelyn Faust (West Rowan) had three kills and two blocks in Lenoir-Rhyne’s win against Fayetteville State.

Nicole Barringer (South Rowan) got her first win as a college head coach on Saturday when William Peace beat  Randolph College.

Madison Myers (West Rowan) had three blocks for William Peace.

Carson grads Sophie Andrews and Krystina McGrady are playing for the Davidson County Community College Storm.

 

College cross country

Sophomore Faith Faller (East Rowan) and freshman Sean Incardona (East Rowan) were standouts for Lenoir-Rhyne in a season-opening meet in Spartanburg, S.C.

Faller, who was injured as a high school senior and college freshman, was 18th overall and second among D-II runners in 20:07.

Incardona was 15th in an 8K in  27:36.

Charlotte’s Zachary Marchinko (Carson) ran a PR 15:29.3 for fifth place in the 5K  Charlotte Opener at Frank Liske Park on Friday and helped the 49ers win the team championship.

Charlotte’s Alex Cornwell (Hickory Ridge) ran 15:36.5 for 10th place.
