COOLEEMEE — A 17-year-old boy drowned in Cooleemee Saturday night.

Emergency personnel received the call at 6:01 p.m. Saturday, according to Rowan County Telecommunications. The boy was found at Cooleemee River Park, commonly known as “the Bullhole,” which sits on the Rowan and Davie County lines. The teen has not yet been identified.

According to Cooleemee police, the boy was last seen swimming below the falls at the park — a danger with all the recent rain, which increases the water’s force. The Davie County Sheriff’s Office, Davie County Rescue and Woodleaf Fire and Rescue responded. The teen’s body was recovered approximately 30 minutes after he went under and was found 200 yards down river from the falls.

The teen’s mother was at the scene. Deputies are waiting for the entire family to be notified before releasing his name.

Cooleemee police are investigating the incident.
