Local Bridge with Myrnie McLaughlin

After 60 years, the Salisbury Women’s Club game ended with the Aug. 28 game. The game will live on as “Bridge at Rufty,” meeting on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center.
Since the Women’s Club has lost membership and is dissolving, they are selling the building. This left us the task of finding a spot for our much loved game. Rufty- Holmes offered us a place to land. As one of the “older” members of the club, joining the duplicate scene in the 1990s, I remember fondly the many characters playing there. They taught me more than one lesson about bridge etiquette and systems. So many ghosts of days past will remain and may play an eerie game or two at the old club.
Pat Featherston, Judy Hurder, Carol and Harold Winecoff, Marie Pugh, Fern Albracht and Loyd Hill are the only players besides John and me who are still playing with the group. Since so many players died, by the early 2000s the game struggled to stay alive. When our long time director Billy Burke died, the task fell to me to revive the game and push on. With the help of many friends we managed to survive and are growing. I hope that we will continue to thrive in our new home. All duplicate players are welcome to join our family in our new home.
Our other duplicate game, Evergreen, was established in the 1980s by Clyde Steele and is healthy and also growing, welcoming new members.
Winnning our Aug. 24 Evergreen game were: N/S 1st Carol Bachl and Judy Gealy, 2nd Carol and Harold Winecoff, 3rd Wade Lowder and Fred Bachl; E/W 1st Mary Hennie and Ann Hamm (two of our newest players) , 2nd Rosemary Sokolowski and Joy Hamilton, 3rd Patty and Robbo Williams.
