ROCKWELL — Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church and other local churches banded together Saturday to serve the community, families and students of East Rowan through a backpack, school supplies and uniform giveaway.
This is the second year the church has held a back-to-school giveaway, and this year’s event looked different than last year’s.
“Being called to be the hands and feet of Christ, we saw a need to go into the community,” Terrie Tidwell, church member and event organizer said. “So many families aren’t able to provide transportation, so why not take what they need to them?”
The group delivered supplies to Pearl Street Apartments and the surrounding community Saturday. Here, students were able to pick out a book bag that was stuffed with supplies and uniforms. Tidwell said families expressed gratitude and appreciation for the giveaway coming to them.
One resident even made several trips to pick up kids and bring them to Pearl Street Apartments so they wouldn’t be left out.
“Not only were we giving,  but in exchange the smiles that radiated off the faces of those receiving brought great joy to us,” Tidwell said. “It was a great fellowship with all that came out.”
The churches will supply Rockwell, Shive, Morgan, Faith and Granite Quarry Elementary schools with book bags, socks and underwear at each school’s open house. Supplies will be made available to any family that needs them.
