SALISBURY — Filing for four seats on the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education closed Friday, with three of four slots remaining uncontested and one incumbent not filing for re-election.

The one contested race is for Seat 1, representing North Rowan High, Henderson Independent, North Rowan Middle, North Rowan Elementary and Hanford Dole Elementary schools. Newcomers Kevin Jones and Lawrence Bolen will compete for the seat.

The seat is currently held by Richard Miller, who is completing his second term on the board. He did not respond to an inquiry about whether he plans to run for re-election.

Incumbent board members filed for re-election to the three uncontested seats.

The first incumbents to file were Travis Allen and Jean Kennedy, who are running for the board’s fourth and sixth seats, respectively.

Seat 4 represents West Rowan High School, West Rowan Middle, Hurley Elementary, Mount Ulla Elementary and West Rowan Elementary, which will consolidate Cleveland and Woodleaf elementar schools when it opens in December.

Allen has held the seat since 2014.

Seat 6 represents special areas throughout the county. Kennedy is campaigning for her third four-year term.

Incumbent Dean Hunter filed for his second term on the board representing Seat 2, or South Rowan High, Corriher-Lipe Middle, China Grove Elementary, Enochville Elementary, Landis Elementary and Millbridge Elementary schools.
