Red Cross Blood Drive August 22

Written by Robert Harling, “Steel Magnolias” takes place in Truvy Jones’ salon, where six friends convene throughout their lives. The success of this heartfelt tribute is due in part to the incredibly popular 1989 film adaption. But the cast urges theatre-goers to enter Truvy’s Beauty Shop with an open mind and an open heart. What makes the play so special is its delicate attention to the relationships women have with each other.
The cast includes Jean Kadela as M’Lynn Eatenton, Krissey Browder as Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie, Sharon Foster as Truvy Jones, Nancy Gaines as Clairee Belcher, Lillie Oden as Ouiser Boudreaux, and Caitlin Billings as Annelle Dupuy-DeSoto.

Call for vendors
Tractor Supply in Salisbury invites all local growers, crafters and artisans to showcase homemade and homegrown goods at its fall Farmers Market on Saturday, Sept. 22.
Vendors with everything from produce and soaps to homemade crafts and candles are encouraged to sign up.
During the Farmers Market vendors will be able sell their goods, free of charge, in areas near the Tractor Supply storefront. Nonprofit organizations and food trucks are also encouraged to register.
All vendors participating in this event will be responsible for complying with local and state ordinances.

Trinity Oaks Singers and Ringers present musical tribute

Trinity Oaks Singers and Ringers will honor the musical legacy of Marjorie and Homer Haworth in a concert at Trinity Oaks next Thursday.
Marjorie Haworth, former music teacher and choral conductor, was a singer in the alto section of the Trinity Singers as well as its director and accompanist, supported by her husband Homer.
One of her former students, Mark Cabaniss, is now a professional music publisher, producer, conductor, ASCAP composer and arranger as well as instructor of music business at Belmont University in Nashville.
Cabaniss has written a tribute to his former music teachers and the concert features one of his songs, “Rockwood River,” which will be sung in her memory and in Homer’s honor.

Save the Date — Jesse’s Ride and Run
ROCKWELL — The 2018 Jesse’s Ride and Run, whose proceeds benefit sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorder, happens Saturday, Sept. 22 at Organ Lutheran Church, 1515 Organ Church Road.
The Poker Run will start and end at the church with stops in between. The Ride is not limited to motorcycles — any road-worthy vehicle may participate.
Registration starts at 8 a.m. Sept. 22. The Shive Shuffle 5K Run will begin at 9 a.m. Opening ceremonies begin right after the start of the Run. The Ride starts with first bikes/vehicles out at 9:50 a.m.
Anyone who registers as a rider or runner will receive a meal and a chance to win $100 for the high poker hand from the poker run. Registration is $25.
Nationally known country singer Rockie Lynne will be the main entertainment.
All proceeds go to Honor One, a charity providing help to military, fire, police and first responders suffering with PTSD.

Rowan Public Library hosts senior healthcare & wellness workshop

Rowan Public Library and its Adult Outreach Services have teamed up with Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, Comfort Keepers, and McIntyre Elder Law to share information with the community about senior healthcare and wellness.
This workshop will celebrate seniors and their families, offering opportunities for questions and answers as well as fun activities and refreshments.
Participants can learn, for example, how to deal with isolation — particularly isolation caused by physical immobility or lack of transportation — through Rowan Individual Transportation Assistance (RITA) bus, which can assist in getting to doctors’ appointments.
The RITA bus operates in different parts of the county on different days. On Friday, Aug. 24, it will be in East Rowan. Those who live there and want to attend the workshop but lack transportation can arrange transportation by calling RITA at 704-216-8888 no later than 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23.
The Senior Healthcare & Wellness Workshop is free and open to all ages.
