SALISBURY — The Country Club of Salisbury is busy getting ready for the 65th annual Crowder/Dorsett Memorial 4-Ball Labor Day golf tournament.

Qualifying rounds are coming up on Aug. 24-26, for the main event on Sept. 1-3. Qualifying pairings will be announced on Aug. 22.

The deadline for entries is approaching. Entries must be turned into the golf shop by 5 p.m. this Sunday, Aug. 19.

All residents of Rowan County (as of Aug. 1, 2018) are eligible for the tournament, as are any golfers who have played in a previous Labor Day event. Any members of a Rowan County golf club and members of all reciprocal clubs are also eligible.

“With six days of entries to come in, we are looking to have the largest field in recent history,” said the club’s head golf professional, Chad Campbell.

Campbell added that the club is in search of volunteers for the event and there  are a wide variety of positions that volunteers can sign up for:

Starter — Starters are needed for the first and tenth tee. Starters allow groups to begin their golf round and get groups ready and waiting for their time of play. There will be a mandatory starters’ meeting on Aug. 23 at 5:30 p.m., at the club’s pro shop.

Driving Range — Range volunteers will help get players to their tee time by listening to the starter.

Spotter — Spotters will help players find errant balls by watching to see where the tee shot lands. Spotters will also help with stopping golf carts from driving up toward a player, who is ready to swing.

Nos.9 and 18 Greens — Greens volunteers thank players for playing in the tournament and remind players to return their golf carts immediately.

Bag Boys and Girls — Must be able to carry at least one full set of clubs. Bag volunteers help unload  players’ golf bags at the golf bag drop off location so the carts can be returned immediately following a round.

Campbell said that volunteers are the most valuable resources of the event that makes the Labor Day event so special.  “Experience is not necessary as we will train people and provide them with the coaching they may need,” he said. “If someone is unsure of where his or her talents will best fit, just sign-up and the volunteer coordinator will help find the best fit.”

According to Campbell, a volunteer will receive lunch on the days worked, as well as having swimming pool access, once their shift is over.
