Area Sports Briefs: South, East battle to soccer tie

South Rowan and East Rowan battled to a 5-all tie in boys soccer on Wednesday in Granite Quarry.

Eber Tapia scored four goals for South, and the Raiders (1-0-1) also tallied on an own goal.

Harrison  Ward had two assists, while Lupe Bautista had one.

Alex Kalogeromitros scored four goals to pace  the Mustangs (0-1-1). Dalton Vandervere scored a goal. Landon Ketchie and James Lomax had two assists each.

Prep volleyball

Carson opened the volleyball season by beating  Greensboro Grimsley 25-15, 25-19 and 25-21 on Wednesday in China Grove.

Jaden Vaughn (9), Mallory Weast (8) and Nancy Gamewell (7) led the Cougars in kills.

Grace Thomas had 25 assists, while Kary Hales had 23 digs.

South Rowan rolled against A.L. Brown 25-12, 25-8 and 25-14 at  home on Wednesday.

Anna Rymer had 10 kills and 10 assists for the Raiders (2-0). Kira Rymer had eight kills, 10 digs and 10 assists. Payton Black had 12 digs.

South is home against Carson today.

Jayvee volleyball

Zoie Miller had five kills and Kendall Walter had four as South Rowan’s jayvees won 25-18 and 25-16 against A.L. Brown on Wednesday.

Prep tennis

Salisbury’s girls tennis team won against West Davidson, 9-0, in a Central Carolina Conference match on Wednesday.

Emma Nianouris, Meredith Burton, Margaret Thurman, Abby Campion, Skye Mowery and Sophie Chmiel won in singles for the Hornets (2-0, 2-0 CCC).

Thurman, Campion, Mowery and Chmiel won 6-0, 6-0.

Burton/Nianuoris, Thurman/Mowery and Campion/Chmiel were winning doubles teams.

Little League softball

The Southeast Regional champion Daniel Boone Little League (Gray, Tenn.) went 2-4 in the 11-12 World Series in Portland, Oregon.

Wheelersburg, Ohio, won the World Series on Wednesday night. Tunkhannock, was runner-up.

The Florida team that won the 13-14 Southeast Regional at Salisbury Community Park went 4-2 in the World Series in Kirkland, Wash.

The Snow Canyon Little League team from Utah went 7-0 to take the championship.

The Florida team that won the 15-16 Southeast Regional at Salisbury Community Park went 3-2 in the World Series in Lower Sussex, Del.

A team from the Philippines went 6-1 and won the championship.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS—  Tyler Frost had a walk-off double in the 10th inning, as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Augusta GreenJackets, 7-6, on Wednesday.

With the victory, the Intimidators snapped an eight-game losing streak.

After the GreenJackets scored three runs in the top of the ninth, Kannapolis tied the game 6-6 in the bottom of the inning when Michael Hickman smacked  a two-run double.

Prep football

Shelby beat Freedom, 31-21, to get the high school football season started on Wednesday.
