SALISBURY — A Salisbury man was charged with drug possession after he crashed into a building and vehicles at the city garage.

Officials said he was slow to respond to questions.

James Addison Duke, 28, of the 700 block of Mocksville Avenue, was charged Friday with misdemeanor possession of a Schedule II substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the Salisbury Police Department.

Officers responded about 3 a.m. Friday to a vehicle accident North Fulton and West Cemetery streets. An officer saw several skid marks outside the city garage parking lot. There was damage to the building and several vehicles parked there.

The officer tried to get Duke out of his vehicle, which had major damage to the front. A report noted that Duke was slow to respond, his speech was slurred and he was unsteady on his feet. He submitted to a field sobriety test.

An officer searched Duke and found a white powder that later tested positive as oxycodone. The search also turned up a burned kitchen knife and spoon that were wrapped in a napkin.

Duke was given a blood test, and results are pending.

He gave a written promise to appear in court.
