Salisbury baseball’s Jack Fisher and West Rowan volleyball’s Tori Hester announced college commitments on Friday.

Fisher, a rising senior, is a 6-foot-3 lefty pitcher who plays center field for the Hornets when he’s not on the mound. He committed to UNC Wilmington.

Fisher was runner-up for Central Carolina Conference Pitcher of the Year honors as a junior and was  All-Rowan County.

Fisher was 7-3 on the mound as a junior. He struck out 71 and had a 2.08 ERA.

He had a huge summer for the Canes showcase team and was clocked at 87 miles per hour. He also was offered by East Carolina.

“He had an unbelievable summer, especially at the end of it,” Salisbury coach Mike Herndon said. “Everything clicked for him.”

Fisher is a fine athlete. He was the county’s soccer  player of the year last fall and is the kicker for the football team. He also may play basketball this winter.

Fisher plans to make things official with UNCW in the early signing period this fall.

Hester, 5-foot-9, a rising junior, announced a commitment to Troy University in Alabama. She was the Rowan County Player of the Year  and All-North Piedmont Conference as a sophomore. She led the Falcons in kills and digs.

Troy competes in the Sun Belt Conference with schools such as Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern and Georgia State.

DB Jumal Rolle (Catawba) picked off two Johnny Manziel passes on Friday to help Hamilton crush Montreal, 50-11, in CFL action.

Local golf

In the ninth North Carolina Match Play tournament at Gaston Country Club, Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro)  tied for second in two rounds of stroke play qualifying, shooting 68-66 —134.

Parker Chavis (South Rowan, Cape Fear CC) shot 71-67 — 138 to tie for 15th, while Davis Richards (South Rowan, NC State) shot 71-71 — 142 and took the 32nd spot in a playoff.

All three moved on to the match play portion of the tournament.

Richards lost to No. 1 seed Carson Ownbey in the Round of 32.

Chavis, seeded 16th, won his first round match but lost to Ownbey in the Round of 16.

Lyerly won two tough matches to advance to the quarterfinals. He’ll play at 8:30 a.m. today.

Salisbury’s Frank Adams III competed in the PGA Barracuda Championship in Reno, Nevada.

Adams finished two rounds at plus-5 in the Stableford scoring system, but the cutline fell at plus-7.

Intimidators

The Kannapolis Intimidators were washed out again on Friday.

Kannapolis has a home game tonight against Greensboro at 7:05 and hopes to play two against the Grasshoppers on Sunday afternoon at 1:05.
