SALISBURY — A Wilkesboro man was convicted on identity theft, assault and other charges this week by a jury in Rowan County Criminal Superior Court.

Dustin Steven Perkins, 34, was sentenced by Judge Anna Mills Wagoner to a minimum of 22 months to a maximum of 36 months in prison, along with consecutive sentences of 150 days and 60 days.

Officials said the jury found Perkins not guilty of felony first-degree kidnapping. He was found guilty of felony identity theft, misdemeanor assault on a female, misdemeanor resisting a public officer and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

On April 16, 2016, officers with the Salisbury Police Department were sent to a residence to investigate a report of a kidnapping. Officers found the victim crying and bleeding from her mouth. She said she and Perkins got into a verbal argument that turned physical after she threatened to call police.

The woman said Perkins held her in a bedroom and threw her across the room, hit her in the face several times, held her in a headlock and ripped her shirt. She said she swung at Perkins with a pocketknife. She ran to a neighbor for help, and the neighbor called 911.

The neighbor told authorities that the victim and her daughter came to her door and the victim was bleeding.

When officers located Perkins next door, he became belligerent, yelled obscenities and provided a fake name and date of birth.

Perkins and the victim were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries. While at the hospital, Perkins gave the staff with a Social Security number that belonged to a person in New York.

Perkins has previous convictions on charges of felony assault on a government official, assault on a female, communicating threats, resisting a public officer, and others.

Rowan County District Attorney Brandy Cook said she appreciates the work of Assistant District Attorney Paxton Butler, the investigation conducted by the Salisbury Police Department, and the courage of the victim who testified in court.

Domestic violence continues to be a problem, Cook said, adding that the Family Crisis Council of Rowan County offers temporary shelter to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children along with support services.
