Area Sports Briefs: Rowan Little League in regional championship game, one win from another World Series trip

The Rowan Little League softball  team (ages 11-12) romped to a 19-1 win against Tennessee on Sunday afternoon and has reached the championship game of the Southeast Regional in Warner Robins, Ga.

Rowan is 3-0 in the tournament and plays for a World Series berth in Portland, Oregon, today at 10 a.m. The opponent will be Tennessee, which eliminated West Virginia on Sunday night.

Karsen Simpson pitched four innings, while Kendall Robinson pitched the last two. Rowan pounded 21 hits. Emma Clarke, Robinson and Cailynn Winford socked home runs.

Brooke Piper had four hits and scored four runs. Campbell Schaen had three hits and scored four runs. Clarke had two hits and drove in three runs. Simpson had three hits and three RBIs. Robinson had two hits and drove in four. Chloee Stoner went 2-for-2. Winford had three hits and three RBIs.

West Virginia edged Florida, 2-1, early Sunday in an elimination game.

Legion baseball

Wilmington  Post 10 shut  out Pitt County, 4-0, on Sunday to advance to the state tournament championship game.

Mitch Baddour struck out 12 batters and held Pitt County to five hits.

Wilmington is one of the Area II representatives in the state tournament for the ninth time in the last 10 years and has won 10 state titles (1956, 1959, 1960, 1962, 1970, 1980, 1994, 1995, 2012 and 2013).

Youth track

Hurley YMCA Warrior Macy Miller earned All-America honors at the USATF championships in Greensboro in the 11-12 girls high jump.

Miller cleared the bar at 4 feet, 9 inches to take fifth place.

Wood bat leagues

Brandon Walton (West Rowan, Mars Hill) is batting .308 for the Concord Athletics team that is playing the Mooresville Spinners in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League championship series.

The Spinners beat the Athletics, 7-6, in 10 innings in Game 1 of the SCBL championship series on Sunday night at Moor Park.

Walton drove in a run for the Spinners.

Cal Hubbard (NW Cabarrus, Mars Hill) had a hit for the Spinners. Walker Joyce (S. Rowan, Surry CC, East Tennessee) pitched two innings with two strikeouts.

Joe Butts (Catawba) is batting .298 for the Kernersville Bulldogs of the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League.

Butts has an on-base percentage of .400. He has 12 steals and 26 RBIs.

Ike Freeman (East Rowan, UNC) smashed two homers for the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod Baseball League on Wednesday and powered another homer on Friday.

Cameron Morrison (Catawba) hit his fourth homer of the summer on Wednesday for the Asheboro Copperheads of the Coastal Plain League.

Hunter Shepherd (Catawba) has four homers and 17 RBIs for the Morehead City Marlins of the Coastal Plain League.

Local golf

The Rowan Junior Open will be held on Aug. 20-21 at the Club at Irish Creek and  Warrior.

Entry fee is $85. Entry deadline is Aug. 18.

Boys will compete in four age divisions, with girls competing in three age groups.

The McCanless Couples enjoyed good weather and good golf on Sunday.

The team of Jan Godwin, Harry Owen, Pam and Ralph Carver led the field.   

Mary & Gene Seaford and David & Azalee Huneycutt took second place.

Susan Wydner had the longest putt.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS —  Yosmer Solorzano allowed just one hit over five innings, and Jhoan Quijada was also effective on the mound, as the Kannapolis Intimidators shut down the Delmarva Shorebirds in a 6-0 win on Sunday.

The Intimidators’ staff recorded its eighth shutout of the year.

First-round draft pick Nick Madrigal didn’t play for Kannapolis on Sunday but the No. 4 overall pick out of Oregon State has had a fine start to his pro career.

Not a lot of power in his first 10 games with Kannapolis (no homers, three doubles), but plenty of contact. Madrigal is batting a sizzling .389.

In 37 trips to the plate for the Intimidators, the 21-year-old shortstop has walked only once and has yet to strike out.
