Area Sports Briefs: Mocksville Junior Legion wins

MANTEO — Mocksville stayed unbeaten in the Junior Legion state tournament by whipping Dare County, 9-0, on Sunday.

Hunter Meacham had three hits, including two doubles, and Joe Johnson had two hits and two RBIs.

John Danveport, Zack Rogers and Johnson combined on the shutout for Mocksville (24-8).

Mocksville takes on South Caldwell at 4 p.m. today.

Little League softball

In the 10U Tournament of Champions in Clarksville, Tenn., Rowan Little League  beat Windermere, Fla., 12-9, on Saturday.

Arabelle Shulenburger  got the win for Rowan. Kennedi Fisher went 2-for-4. Ella Doby went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.  Andie Evans went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and Olivia Polson has four RBIs.

Rowan lost 15-9 to a tough Bridgewater, Virginia team in their second game Saturday. Evans was 3-4 with 3 RBIs and Charlotte Jones went 3-3 with 2 RBIs. Rowan will play in the consolation Sunday at 12 against Florida.

Florida won the Junior Little League Southeast Regional in Salisbury on Sunday and qualified for the World Series.

The championship of the Senior  Little League  Southeast Regional won’t be decided until today at 9:30 a.m. when unbeaten Florida takes on once-beaten Virginia  at Salisbury Community Park for the title and a trip to the World Series in Delaware.

Legion softball

Rowan County plays at Concord tonight at 7 p.m. in the first round of the playoffs.

Concord, the defending state champ, has won 13 in a row, and is the top seed.

Intimidators

HICKORY — Evan Skoug hit an RBI single in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 2-1 win over the Hickory Crawdads on Sunday.

Johan Cruz scored the go-ahead run on the single after he entered the game as a pinch runner on second base and advanced to third on a groundout.

Hickory had a runner on second in the bottom of the 10th, but Yonny Hernandez grounded out to end the game.

Reliever Jose Nin (3-3) went three scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out two to get the win. Joseph Kuzia (1-2) went 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run and one hit in the South Atlantic League game.
