Area Sports Briefs: Adams shoots 70 in PGA event

Salisbury’s Frank Adams III is playing in the PGA Tour’s Barbasol Championship and shot 32-38 — 70 (2-under) in Thursday’s first round at Keen Trace Colf Club in Nicholas, Ky.

Prep basketball

South Rowan announced  the hiring of Stacy Ellis as its new head girls basketball coach.

He has been highly successful in the AAU ranks.

Minor leagues

HICKORY — Pedro Gonzalez homered and had three hits, driving in two as the Hickory Crawdads defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 14-10 on Thursday.

Up 1-0, Hickory batted around in the second inning, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs, including solo home runs by Gonzalez and Tyreque Reed.

The Crawdads later added five runs in the third and one in the fifth. In the third, Samuel Huff hit a two-run home run, while Preston Scott hit an RBI single in the fifth.

Hickory starter Reid Anderson (3-6) picked up the win despite allowing six runs and 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings. Opposing starter Jhoan Quijada (0-3) took the loss in the South Atlantic League game after allowing eight runs and three hits over one inning.

Craig Dedelow was a triple short of the cycle, driving in five runs.

Sacramento’s Jerry Sands (Catawba) hit two home runs on Wednesday and has 15 for the season.

American Legion

Shelby scored five runs in the top of the 10th and held off Cherryville for a  wild 10-7 win on Thursday.

Robbie Cowie drove in four runs for Cherryville. Shelby leads the series 2-0.

Game 3 is tonight at Shelby’s Keeter Stadium.

Junior Legion

The state tournament gets under way today in Manteo at 10 a.m.

Area III champ Mocksville is set to play at 1 p.m.

Legion softball

Rowan County returns to action on Monday with a first-round playoff game at Concord at 7 p.m.

Little League softball

The Rowan County majors team (11-12) will play in the Southeast Regional in Warner Robins, Ga., on Thursday.
