Area Sports Briefs: Madrigal has big debut for Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS— Nick Madrigal helped lead Oregon State to its third national championship last month.
The Chicago White Sox took him fourth overall and signed him for a $6,411,400 bonus 12 days ago.
Madrigal went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base in his Kannapolis debut Tuesday afternoon to help lead the Intimidators to a 10-9 win over Hagerstown at Intimidators Stadium.
Evan Skoug hit a bases-clearing triple in the third inning. The triple by Skoug came in the midst of a five-run inning and gave the Intimidators a 5-4 lead.
Will Kincanon allowed a run, but got Yasel Antuna to ground out with runners on first and third to end the game for his third save of the season.
Starter Drew Harrington (6-4) got the win while Sam Held (2-5) took the loss in relief in the South Atlantic League game.
SAC
The South Atlantic Conference announced its 2017-18 Women and Man of the Year Awards on Monday.
Wingate cross country and track and field runner Valerie Griesche was named SAC Woman of the Year, while Lenoir-Rhyne track and field athlete Haylea Salamon was named SAC International Woman of the Year.
In addition, Mars Hill baseball player Zac Brown was named the SAC Man of the Year.
Local golf
In U.S. Amateur qualifying, Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro) shot 1-over 73 in Tuesday’s first round at Oak Valley in Advance.
Lyerly had birdies on No. 1 and No. 2 but a double bogey on No. 4 was a setback.
Five golfers will advance after two rounds, with two alternates.
William Gordon of Davidson shot 63 to set the pace. Lyerly is tied for 31st and is five shots behind the golfers tied for fifth, so he’ll have some work to do today. He’ll tee off on No. 1 at 8 a.m. today.
Michael Childress (Cannon School, Richmond) shot 2-over 74. Childress had a strong round going until he suffered a triple bogey on No. 12.
He’ll start at 8:30 a.m. today on No.10.
Charlie Barr, a Salisbury teen who attends Cannon School, shot 78 but failed to make the cut.

The Corbin Hills Women’s Golf Association played a Low Net contest.
Ruth Bowles, 89, shot her age.
Bev Cobb won overall low net.

Prep soccer
The West men’s soccer team, coached by Salisbury High’s Matt Parrish, lost to the East all-stars, 2-1, in overtime on Tuesday at Macpherson Stadium in Browns Summit.
Francisco Tapia scored for the West. Salisbury’s Pedro Cruz was a defender for the West.
Hoggard’s Cesar Cruz was the MVP.

The East all-stars rolled to a 4-0 win in the girl game.
Clayton’s Emery Biggs (Clayton H.S.) was MVP.

Youth baseball
In the Cal Ripken 11U West state tournament, Southwest Forsyth won the tournament, with Yadkinville finishing as runner-up. Southwest Forsyth and Yadkinville advanced to regional play.
East Rowan Diamond Sports won games in the losers bracket against South Buncombe, South Charlotte and North Piedmont. China Grove won against McDowell, Waxhaw and Matthews before beating East Rowan, 14-10, in the losers bracket semifinal. China Grove lost to Southwest Forsyth, 6-2, in the losers bracket final.
In the championship round, Southwest Forsyth took two out of three from Yadkinville.
