Area Sports Briefs: Former Catawba slugger Sands promoted

Jerry Sands (Catawba) has been promoted from Double A Richmond to Triple A Sacramento in the San Francisco Giants farm system.

Sands, 30, has been really hot lately and has hit .406 in his last 10 games. He’s swatted 13 homers, as he tries to get back to the major leagues.

His last at-bats in the big leagues were with the Chicago White Sox in 2016.

He went 2-for-4 in his first game with Sacramento on Thursday.

Legion softball

In Rowan County’s 16-2 win against Stanly County on Thursday, Haley Strange and Karley Teague pitched well. Maddie Trexler, Kary Hales, Mackenzie Sprinkle, Olivia Gardner and HannahPratt had big offensive nights.

Little League softball

The Rowan Little League majors team (ages 11-12) will be playing today in Forest City in the state tournament.

Rowan plays a conglomeration of Little Leagues (Boiling Springs, Chase and Rutherfordton) in the first round at 3 p.m.

Rowan is looking for its fifth straight state title in this age group.

Wood bat leagues

Holden Lanier (North Rowan) is batting .370 for the High Point Locos with two homers and five doubles. He was 2-for-2 on Thursday.

Junior Legion

Randolph Red beat Mocksville, 4-2, in the first game of the Area III championship series on Friday.

Mocksville hosts Game 2 tonight at Rich Park.

All-Star games

Salisbury’s Matt Parrish will be coaching the West boys squad in the East-West All-Star Game in Greensboro on Tuesday.

Parrish coached Salisbury to state titles in 2011, 2013 and 2015. He was the 2013 state coach of the year.

Salisbury grad Pedro Cruz, a defender, will play for the West team at MacPherson Stadium

West Rowan grad Caleb Mauldin and Carson grad Jamarius Hairston are in Monday’s boys basketball game at Greensboro Coliseum that gets the East-West week started.

• Admission: $10 adults, $5 students.

• Girls, 6:30 p.m.,  boys, 8:30 p.m.

Parking: $5.

The 70th annual East-West football game will be held in Greensboro at Robert D. Jamison Stadium on Wednesday, July 18, at 8 p.m. There will be a fireworks show at halftime.

West Rowan’s Devin Turner, Davie’s Cody Hendrix and A.L. Brown’s Najee Williams will be part of the West defensive unit.

Intimidators

GREENSBORO— Will Allen hit a walk-off single with one out in the 10th inning, as the Greensboro Grasshoppers defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 5-4 on Friday.
