School board to discuss renewal district Thursday

SALISBURY — The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will hold two called meetings Thursday.
The first, to begin at noon, will be to discuss the school district’s opportunity to become a renewal school district.
Becoming a renewal district would allow Rowan-Salisbury Schools to have charter-like flexibility. The North Carolina General Assembly extended the option to RSS in a bill passed during its short session. The school system, should it choose to accept, would be the only such district in the state.
To become a renewal district, the Board of Education must submit a resolution and a strategy plan to the State Board of Education by July 15.
A draft of the plan’s key components attached to the board’s online agenda says the school system would focus on upholding its strategic plan of literacy first and would have teacher-led teams to help design and tweak curriculum and other policy changes.
As of Tuesday, the district would continue with its plans for 16 restart schools during the 2018-19 school year.
Following the noon meeting, the board will hold a separate called meeting at 4 p.m. to put its final budget for the 2018-19 fiscal year in order.
The board will also consider adopting a resolution to become a renewal school district.
The meetings will be in the Wallace Educational Board Room, 500 N. Main St.
