Area Sports Briefs: Softball all-district teams announced; Davidson edges Rowan twice in Legion softball

The North Carolina Softball Coaches Association released its all-district teams on Thursday.

Rowan County is in a nine-county district that includes Cabarrus, Union and Mecklenburg.

West Rowan’s Parker Greene, Mary Sobataka, Taylor Walton and Alexandra Linder made the 3A all-district team, along with Carson’s Rylie Stewart, Katie Jewell and Kary Hales.

South Rowan’s Brooke Lowery, Whitley Arnott and Summer McKeon made the 2A all-district team.

A.L. Brown’s Lauren Ritchie made 3A all-district.

Cox Mill’s Paysia Reed was 3A district player of the year with Cox Mill’s Madison Michael and Central Cabarrus’ Riley Tucker sharing 3A pitching honors.

Davie County had four players make all-district, with Sierra Ferguson, Sydney Wyatt, Anna Devereaux and Bridgett Tierney honored.

Softball All-State teams will be announced soon.

Legion softball

Rowan County lost twice on Thursday at Davidson County.

Rowan (3-4) got good pitching from Haley Strange and Karley Teague but fell 3-2 and 2-1.

In the 3-2 setback, Rowan was held to four hits. Tate Barger had two. Hannah Pratt and Brooke Lowery had one each.

In the 2-1 loss, Lowery, a South Rowan graduate who is headed to Catawba, went 2-for-2 and drove in a run.  Olivia Gardner, McKenzie Misenheimer and Kary Hales had a hit apiece.

Rylie Lingerfelt and Katie McNeil provided outstanding pitching for Davidson County.

Concord won two against  Kannapolis, 4-3 and 12-2, on Thursday.

Kasey Rowden’s fifth-inning triple cleared the bases and pulled out the first game for Concord.

Eastern Randolph walloped Stanly County, 12-1, on Thursday.

The second game of the doubleheader was washed out.

College hoops

DCCC announced the signing of 6-3 guard Jermaine Jones from Charlotte Secondary High School.

Local golf

Faye Cline scored her first hole-in-one on Thursday at the Revival Golf Club at the Crescent.

Cline used a 5-hybrid club on No. 15 to card the ace, witnessed by Phylliss Durland and Sherry Freeze.

Parks and Rec

Salisbury Parks and Rec will host its annual Greenway 5k Run/Walk and Half Mile Fun Run on Saturday, July 14, at 8 a.m. at Knox Middle School.

Junior Legion

In Junior Legion action on Wednesday, Carson beat Kannapolis, 10-0.

On Thursday, West Rowan romped against Statesville, 13-1, and Salisbury beat Kannapolis, 8-1.
