Rowan County Crosby Scholars 

SALISBURY — The Rowan County Crosby Scholars program recently established the Bob Casmus Scholarship in honor of the long-time athletic trainer. The Scholarship will be awarded for the first time to a Crosby Scholar senior in the Class of 2019. This scholarship will be given to a student who intends to complete a degree in the allied health care field of study.

The scholarship was created by friends, family and co-workers of Bob Casmus following his retirement from Catawba College. Casmus served the college as head athletic trainer from 1990 to 2017.

Casmus began his career at Chowan College, and he has also volunteered at the 1987 Pan American Games, with stints of working with the United States Olympic organization in 1988 and 1990. He has received multiple awards and been inducted into both the North Carolina Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame (2013) and the District III Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame (2015).

Currently, Casmus serves as the supervisor for athletic trainers for Novant Health Sports Medicine in the greater Winston-Salem area and oversees the athletic trainers for the Davidson County Schools, Davie County High School and Bishop McGuinness High School.

Tom Childress and Dr. Tom Appenzeller, retired friends from Catawba College, worked to create this scholarship and are continuing to accept donations toward it through the Rowan County Crosby Scholars program. Crosby Scholar seniors will be able to apply for this scholarship in the spring 2019, and the winner will be announced at the Senior Gala at the end of April.

Three senior classes of Crosby Scholars have graduated and enrolled in colleges as close as Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and as far away as New York University in the program’s first five years. Rowan County Crosby Scholars has given away close to $150,000 in Last Dollar Grants to students with unmet financial need and has awarded more than $54,000 in scholarship funds.

Rowan County Crosby Scholars is a free college access program available to all public middle and high school students. Sixth through tenth graders are encouraged to enroll in the program through Oct. 1.
