Area Sports Briefs: Laws, Brooks strong in minor league outings

Colton Laws (Carson, Charlotte 49ers) pitched brilliantly for five innings on Wednesday.

Pitching for the Lansing Lugnuts against the Bowling Green Hot Rods in a Class A Midwest League game, Laws allowed three hits, no walks and no runs. He struck out three and evened his record at 2-2.

Craig Brooks (Catawba) was outstanding in a Double A game last night in the Southern League.

Brooks struck out three in two scoreless innings for  the Tennessee Smokies in a 7-5 win against the Jackson Generals.  Brooks pitched the seventh and eighth and gave the Smokies a chance to rally in the ninth.

  HICKORY — Justin Yurchak had two hits and scored two runs, and Lincoln Henzman allowed just five hits over six innings as the Kannapolis Intimidators defeated the Hickory Crawdads 6-4 on Wednesday.

Henzman (5-3) picked up the win after he struck out six and walked one while allowing one run.

With the win, Kannapolis improved to 6-3 against Hickory this season.

Prep baseball

Hickory Ridge and Concord American Legion catcher Jeremiah Boyd was drafted on Wednesday.

He was a 35th-round pick by the Boston Red Sox and the first in  program history to be drafted.

Legion baseball

Eastern Randolph Post 81 fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 4-1 loss to the Garner Nationals. Connor Shipley went 2-for-3 for ER.

Local golf

In the Palmetto Amateur in Aiken, S.C., Nick Lyerly (East Rowan, UNC Greensboro) shot 1-under 69 in the first round.

Lyerly is tied for 13th, seven shots off the pace.

Rowan Bulls

The Rowan Bulls semi-pro entry in the East Coast Basketball League has split its last 10 games after a slow start and is 5-8.

Avery Patterson (A.L. Brown, St. John’s) is averaging 37.5 points per game.

Junior Hairston (West Rowan, Towson) is averaging 22.9 points and 10.5 rebounds.

Tristan Rankin (North Rowan, St. Paul’s) is averaging 19.1 points per game.

Stephen Heggins (South Rowan, Brevard) leads the team with 7.6 assists per game.

The Bulls are on the road Saturday at Winston-Salem Certified.

The Bulls lost last weekend, 138-127, to the Carolina Thunder despite 39 points by Patterson. Heggins had 24, while Hairston had 21.

Lady Legion softball

Rowan County will play home games at East Rowan High this year.

Rowan’s first game is on Tuesday, June 12, a home game against Davidson County.
