Area Sports Briefs: Rowan Legion washed out, on road vs. Concord tonight

Rowan County’s American Legion baseball team remains undefeated, but it’s losing frequently to the weather.

Heavy rain forced postponement of Saturday’s scheduled home game against Concord.

Rowan (6-0) hopes to play at Concord (Mount Pleasant High) tonight in a division contest.

The plan is for Saturday’s washout  to be made up at Newman Park on Monday at 7 p.m. Cherryville visits Rowan for a nine-inning game on Tuesday.

Carson-West Rowan Junior Legion action was washed out on Saturday.

Braxton Davis drove in four runs to lead Randolph County Post 45 to a  7-2 Northern Division win against Kernersville Post 36  on Saturday.

Eastern Randolph  Post 81 scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh to beat Greensboro Post 53  2-1 in a Northern Division game played on Saturday.

Stanly-Mocksville was rained out on Saturday.

Prep softball

Alexander Central rallied to force extra innings and beat Cleveland High of Clayton, 6-4, on Saturday to win the 3A state title.

Cleveland led 4-1 going to the seventh.

Alexander Central swept the state championship series, 2-0. Alexander Central beat Carson twice in the West Regional championship series.

Alleghany swept Louisburg to win the 1A title.

The 2A and 4A championships will be decided today.   

Prep baseball

East teams won three out of four state championships.

Whiteville beat Ledford twice on Saturday for the 2A crown, after Ledford had won the first game on Friday, 10-0.

Fuquay-Varina won a decisive third game against Ardrey Kell for the 4A title, and Wilmington’s New Hanover High beat Crest for the 3A crown.

Murphy was the lone West winner, taking 1A by sweeping West Columbus.

Intimidators

KANNAPOLIS— Aldrem Corredor doubled and singled as the Hagerstown Suns beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 3-2 on Saturday.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Suns and a five-game winning streak for the Intimidators.

Hagerstown took a 2-1 lead in the fourth after Corredor and Yasel Antuna hit RBI doubles.

After Hagerstown added a run in the fifth on a single by Cole Freeman, the Intimidators cut into the deficit in the eighth inning when Tyler Frost drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Anthony Villa.

Kannapolis missed an additional scoring opportunity in the eighth, when Luis Gonzalez struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Hagerstown right-hander Tomas Alastre (3-2) picked up the win after allowing one run on six hits over six innings. Opposing starter Blake Battenfield (5-2) took the loss in the SALgame after giving up three runs and four hits over five innings. Carlos Pena retired the side in order for his first save of the season.

Kannapolis hosts Hagerstown today at 5:05 p.m.
