Area Sports Briefs: Rowan Legion opens at home tonight

Rowan County American Legion is scheduled to start the season at home tonight at 7:30 p.m. against Greensboro.

Legion games are seven innings this season. Most games will start at 7 p.m.

All the Rowan high school teams have been eliminated from the playoffs. Carson lost Friday night at Crest.

Greensboro opened  the season on Saturday with a 7-5 win against Randolph County.

The Southern Division of Area III has six teams — with Stanly, Concord, Kannapolis, Mocksville-Davie and Mooresville joining Rowan.

The seven-team Northern Division of Area III includes Greensboro, Davidson County, Eastern Randolph, High Point, Kernersville, Winston-Salem and Randolph County.

After a couple of rainouts, Kannapolis Post 115 won against Concord, 11-4, at Mount Pleasant High on Saturday.

Cannon School’s Rohan Handa, a 6-foot-3 lefty who is headed to Yale, was the winning pitcher.

Northwest Cabarrus’  Devin Faggart homered and doubled. Homeschooler Michael Harrell homered. A.L. Brown’s Ryan O’Kelly  had two hits and Robinson’s Chase Orrock had two hits.

NWC’s Joe Hubbard is back as Kannapolis Legion coach, with Robinson’s Ryan Hodges assisting.

Prep track and field

Salisbury and South Rowan competed in Saturday’s 2A State Championships in Greensboro.

Lexie May placed sixth for the Hornets in the discus, throwing 105 feet, 3  inches. NiTavia Corpening was 13th in the long jump with a best of 14 feet, 11.5 inches.

For Salisbury’s boys, Tyrone Johnson was 13th in the 200 in 23.23 seconds. Kemuel Sloan was 11th in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, and Tyvion Wood was seventh in the triple jump with an effort of 43 feet, 5 inches.

South Rowan’s Madison Lowery placed eighth in the girls 1600 in 5:33.48.

The 3A Championships and 1A Championships will be conducted today at N.C. A&T.

As far as Rowan athletes, West Rowan’s Jalen Houston is a contender for a championship in the 110 hurdles.

Carson sprinter Mikaila Gadson should be one of the top competitors in the  girls 400.

A.L. Brown phenom Joshua Parks may be a factor in four individual events. He’s one of the top seeds in the 400 and  110 hurdles and he also qualified in the 200 and high jump.

With both the 1A and 3A Championships taking place today, Parks will get more rest time than he had in the 3A Midwest Regional.

Local golf

TEQUESTA, Fla. — Michael Childress and Lansdon Robbins, teammates at Cannon School, shot a 3-under 67 in the first round of the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, Saturday at Jupiter Hills Club. The duo’s score is tied for eighth place in the two-day tournament, which concludes today.

Three teams shot 64 to lead the event at 6-under par — Hayes Brown-Jack Larkin, Kyle Cornett-Patrick Sato and Scott Harvey-Todd Mitchell.

Childress, of Salisbury, is a senior at Cannon and has signed with the University of Richmond. Robbins, of Davidson, is a UNC Wilmington signee.

Minor leagues

KANNAPOLIS  — Luis Gonzalez scored the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the 10th inning, as the Kannapolis Intimidators defeated the Hickory Crawdads 3-2 on Saturday.

Rehabbing hurler Carlos Rodon threw five strong innings for the Intimidators, striking out six, walking none and allowing three hits and one run.

The Crawdads took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th when Tyler Ratliff hit an RBI double, driving in Ryan Dorow.

Tyler Johnson (2-0) got the win in relief while Joe Barlow (0-1) took the loss in the SALgame.

Kannapolis improved to 4-1 against Hickory this season.

Kannapolis will make up a rainout today and will play a doubleheader against the Crawdads, starting at 2:35 p.m.
