CHINA GROVE — On May 9, the South Rowan High School JROTC program hosted its third blood drive in collaboration with the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas.

The blood drive was held in the South Rowan gymnasium to have space for set-up, refreshments, registration and donations.

The JROTC program accepted donations from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., when the last participant’s donation was complete.

The original goal of the blood drive was to collect 84 units of blood. That goal was exceeded with the collection of 94 units of blood. More than 112 students, staff members and family members attempted to give blood.

The blood drive was to fulfill a service learning project that the JROTC program undertakes to give back to the community and to fulfill its mission statement: “Motivating young people to become better citizens.”

“I credit our students — their leadership, resolve and willingness to make a difference,” said Maj. Bill Low, a JROTC instructor. “It is an honor to be a part of something so special.”
