Area Sports Briefs: Carson softball plans to play tonight

Carson’s softball team plans to play a fourth-round 3A playoff game against Marvin Ridge tonight in China Grove at 6 p.m.

The makeup date is Friday if there are weather issues tonight.

Carson (19-6) is the No. 4 seed. Marvin Ridge (22-4) is seeded eighth but is coming off a big win against top-seeded Parkwood in the third round.

Carson has won three playoff games by wide margins – mercy-ruling Stuart Cramer and Kings Mountain before whipping North Buncombe, 9-2.

Rylie Stewart (15-6)  is expected to pitch for the Cougars. She’s pitched eight shutouts and has an ERA of 1.44, with 110 strikeouts.  Skyler Smith is the catcher for the Cougars.

Leading hitters for the Cougars include second baseman Kary Hales (.494, 15 RBIs), DP Kaitlyn Honeycutt (.448, 17 RBIs), shortstop Katie Jewell (.438, 26 RBIs),  first baseman Liza Simmerson (.415, 16 RBIs), Stewart (.371, 14 RBIs), left fielder Haley Howerton (.339, 19 RBIs) and third baseman Jessica Freeze (.349, 8 RBIs).

Jessica Davis has hit eight homers for the Mavericks.

Prep tennis

Salisbury’s match with Brevard was rained out on Wednesday.

Both teams are undefeated.

The teams will play their 2A semifinal match today at noon at Lake Norman Tennis Center, 205 Overhill Drive, Mooresville.

Mid. school golf

The first Rowan County Middle School Golf Championship was played Tuesday at the Country Club of Salisbury, with five schools participating.

Salisbury Academy easily won the  team event with a score of 178.

Leading the Jaguars was Will Webb with a 43.

Erwin shot 199 for second place.  Leading the Eagles was sixth-grader Jaden Sprinkle with a 43.

Luke Graeber shot 4-over 39 for the individual championship. Graeber and Webb are headed to Salisbury.

McGwire  Owen, who is headed to West Rowan, shot 40.

Named all-county were  Graeber, Owen, Webb, Sprinkle, Harrison McCall, Landon Merrill, Gigi Nagy, Warren Fesperman, Whitt Hoesman and Dalton Bostian.

College golf

STOCKTON, Calif. – The UNC Greensboro men’s golf team shot 5-over for three rounds and finished 10th in the NCAA Stockton Regional.

Kansas (281-282-281) won the region at 20-under 844, and  Stanford was one stroke behind (285-283-277).   Iowa State came in third place at 17-under 847 (278-284-285).

Freshman Nick Lyerly (East Rowan) had the best day for the Spartans on Wednesday. He shot 1-under 71 with three birdies on the back nine.

Lyerly’s 75-70-71 — 216 put him at even par. He tied for 30th.

Hurley Y Warriors

The Hurley YMCA Warriors Youth Track team competed in the Gastonia Eagles youth track meet.
